Default How do you delete a file that can't be deleted???

"This file cannot be deleted since it is being used by another program".

But it's not!

How do I delete it? Isn't there a free program that overwrites something like this and deletes it anyway?

assuming windows:

something probably does have it in use. go to sysinternals.com and get process explorer. it's freeware and will tell you what files are open by running processes. kill the process using it and delete the file.

if it's really not being used, then chkdsk should repair the file and/or security descriptor causing the problem.

If you are in w2k or winXp, reboot into console mode (command prompt only) and delete it that way. No processes to mess it up

Saunders
or 95/98... dos/command prompt rules. now, make macos 9 do a command prompt and I'll be happy.

Oh.

Rub a big magnet on the side of the hard drive. That'll get it for sure.

yes.

your media player probally still has a handle on it. Reboot and it will release the file handle and then you can delete it

ctrl-alt-del opens task manager, kill explorer

in task manager, goto run, enter cmd and hit enter (opens command prompt)
using old dos commands, change to directory containing file, type del <filename> and then exit.
Now in task manager, goto run, enter explorer.exe and hit enter
explorer should come back and the file should be deleted. if you get a similiar file in use error in dos as well, then you need to find the offending process and kill it. I find that XP sometimes leaves files undeletable for no reason quite often.

i can do the old-school trick with DOS and delete it manually, but won't the icon still appear on my desktop?

the only way it would stay on your desktop is if it was a link to the actual file. So if it says *.lnk then yeah just delete it off the desktop after you delete the actual file through the dos commands.

I would boot with a Win98 boot disk. Delete the file and it shall be gone.

I had this exact same problem! OT finally got it to work for me.

Do a search for my name and "Star Wars" in OT or something like that and you will find out how to do it. It was about 3 months ago probably.. I forgot

I got un-lazy and searched for you

http://web2.nasioc.com/forums/showth...ight=Star+Wars

The last thing they said to do worked where I had to open a command prompt and delete it from the directory.

in order to delete it from the command prompt without recieving the same message, you have to kill explorer first
