That's kind of what I want to do. But that would require higher octane gas. If a US STi comes out, I'm hunting down a wrecked one. The wiring harnesses and electronics are the big problems. You also need a new cross member. I think Rallispec in NJ charges in the area of 11-16k for the full swap.

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">Jude DeMeis in the NE Region has an STi 3 in an Impreza L wagon. As for the gas, remember that 103 octane in Japan is like 94 octane here. If you use good high octane gas you will be fine.

Addendum to that: you only have to use the high octane gas with the stock STi ECU. If you change out to a TEC or a Link system, you can get away with lower octane.

It's not octane in japan, it's RON I believe. So what he meant to say is 103 RON is like 94 Octane.

You can get it done quite easily. I am seeling a V2 1997 WRX motor that is rated at 260 hp and features a closed deck block
(=very strong for high boost). The mechanical part of the swap is quite simple, as everything is basically the same as the stock 2.5. The hard part is the wiring. Most people are forgoing the wiring headaches and just puuting in a fully programmable ECU, which also allows you to tune for US gas.

Folks there is higher octane gas out there. When my wife and I took a trip to philly last year there were several stations that sold 102 octane pump gas. So it is out there, unfortunately it's hard to find.

I wouldn't worry about the gas thing if you are running a version 3 motor, sunoco 94 has proved to be JUST fine up here, 2 of my buds running version 3s, and another one running a regular jap spec WRX engine with the boost turned up to 18psi.

I wouldn't go up past 20psi though, but at 1 bar (about 15psi) the STI motors really go!

Another funny thing about that- the STI motors are tuned for 1 bar, 15 psi, and the USDM WRXs are STOCK with 14.2 psi (both peak boost of course), what's different? We'll compression ratios, timing, and the exhaust, and that seems to be all so far....

I've got an STi V RA motor waiting to go into my RS.. Octane isn't a problem, as Sunoco 94 is equivalent to 98 ron fuel. Also, 100 octane unleaded is also available at several Sunoco stations relatively close to me.
My engine was around $5k. But it's brand spanking new, in the crate. Most engines you'll find for cheap are of very dubious origins.. If it sounds too good to be true..

If anyone knows where I can get one of these engines, please let me know. I am debating a turbo upgrade but it sounds to me like I can get more bang for the buck out of an engine swap!

If you want to know how to get your hands on a EJ20, PM me. I currently (still) have a V2 1995 WRX engine/tranny,260 hp for sale and I will soon have a V5 STi 280 hp, which will also be for sale.
