Question Opinions on WRX Automatic Transmission

So, I'm looking to get a WRX wagon, but I live in LA, so getting a manual tranny is suicidal in our constant bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Anyone have experience with the WRX automatic? What's it like? Dissappointing like I've heard, or reasonable enough?

It's not the most responsive auto, but you'll enjoy it. I'm used to driving a GS400 auto, so the WRX is just not as quick to shift and go. Give it a drive. I'm sure in Cali you can find one to test drive.

I drove a wagon w/an automatic last week. It seemed very slow to downshift to me. One good thing though is you can hold it in gear by shifting manually, it won't automatically upshift when(if) you hit the limiter. Unfortunately, the way the shifter gate is shaped, it's kind of hard to control precisely. I would suck it up and get a manual.

Good point on the shifer gate, Jay. It would take a ton of practice to even know what gear the shifer is in without taking a looke, STUPID design for functionality.

I know this isn't any help at the moment, but don't the European and/or Japanese home market models have a manu-matic auto-box option, with upshift and downshift buttons or paddles on the steering wheel? Or am I mistaken? Sure would be nice to see that on the US versions as well. Maybe down the road in next year or so?

Yeah I downshift all the time in my Legacy... however my only complaint is that it is WAAAY too easy to go from 3 straight to N because it doesn't 'click' into D very well.

I wish I had the sport-shifter type setup that the new legacies get.

I drove an auto and it had no guts. It would be ok after a few mods, but if your going to leave it stick, then i would think about getting somthing else unless your inlove with the looks which i cant belive u would be.
