Question Leaking Oil from oil filter/oil cooler

Well my car started leaking oil pretty bad today for some reason or another. I jacked the car up and took a look underneath and it had leaked enough oil to spray the whole left underside of the car pretty well. It's comming from the oil filter which is hooked up into a OEM subaru forester oil cooler. My dad had been driving it a few months ago and came across the same problem. He took it to a local mechanic, where he changed the oil, slapped a new oil filter on and BAM the problem was fixed. The mechanic said though that he thought the heat from the header might be melting the oil filter to the point where it would start leaking oil. Well it seems like he was right because after he changed the oil filter it worked fine for say 2000 miles then just today it starts smoking and leaking again. My question is how to get it fixed. Should I go to autozone buy a new filter and some oil and drive it to subaru, or should I just call a tow truck to tow it to subaru and not risk it? (The nearest dealership is about 15-20 miles away) I have a feeling I'm just going to tell subaru to remove the oil cooler and return it to stock, once its there

Sumthin' doesn't seem right, there are plenty of guys who have installed that oil cooler and aren't having that problem. Do you have aftermarket headers on the car that are routed closer to the filter?

I would imagine it's safe to drive 15-20 miles, just check your oil level to be sure it's good before you go. Keep in mind a little oil goes a long way, so you probably haven't leaked out anywhere near enough to risk engine damage, but even a little leakage makes a helluva mess when it's blown all over the bottom of the car at 65mph.

Yeah I have a borla header that comes very close to the oil filter (because the oil cooler drops the filter another 6 inches or so). I noticed it smoking heavily when I was about 50 miles away from my house, so it has been leaking for a good amount of time/distance.

I wonder how hard it would be to fabricate some sort of heat shield to keep the header from being such a problem. That's kind of a bummer, and obviously it defeats the purpose of the oil cooler if it just makes you pick up more heat from the headers.
