Question Warranty Issue ??? Please read...

Anyone get any crap from their subaru dealer beacuse of an aftermarket exhaust?? I asked mine if it would void my powertrain warrnaty and they said..."Yes because they cause excessive backpressure". I just said ok because I did not want to waste my time trying to explain the principle of free flowing exhaust system to an idiot. Isn't that some crap. Im going to call SOA to get the skinny on it.

that is total BS!!!! there is no way they would legally void your powertrain warranty...

no way... there are too many laws out there to protect the consumer against such things...

find somewhere else to get your Subie serviced if possible! these guys don't sound too knowledgable to me! my dealer would NEVER say that !!!!!!

My Dealer when I bought the car said "these are some of the things I know you want to do to your car without voiding the warrenty." 1) exhuast 2) filters 3) Stereo 4) headlights

I e-mailed soa before I got my exhaust the only thing they told me that was not covered was if I broke anything installing it. I will look for the e-mail at home tonight.

Whoever you talked to at your dealership was an idiot and should be reported to SOA as such. If you don't know that aftermarket exhausts cause LESS backpressure you shouldn't be working for the dealership.

I had someone at my dealership (salesman) tell me there was no break-in period for my car since they ran it at the factory on a stand or something for 3 hours. *shrug* Ridiculous.

That is total BS. I have exhaust on my car, and it is in the shop for powertrain coverage right now...no problems. This is the second time it has been in (blown fifth gear synchros) since the mods and all the dealer asked was "Have you modified the car?" I told them just exhaust (I put the intake back to stock whenever I take it in) and they said it was no problem.

I've heard just about anything will void your warranty. Heck if you sneeze on the car wrong it voids the warranty...

ColinL - is that warranty for the MY99 or the MY00???

I'm pretty sure the MY00 warranty isn't as good...

The only way something aftermarket can void your warranty is if they can prove that whatever the aftermarket piece is caused the warranty damage in question.. my friends cv joints went bad because his car was lowered too much.. ie: not covered.. They can not hold you to an exaust or filters specifically, only if the dealership is giving stock ones away for free.. know your rights for the particular state you live in..

Man, am I sorry to hear this crap popping up again. I actually had a dealer do worse to me. I have posted the whole story on the STiMlist man.... about a year and a half ago. I had purchased the WRX STi exhaust from Mike Shields, when it arrived, I anxiously awaited the date when I could get it installed. I called the dealer, and ask for an appointment to have it installed, well guess what? The guy on the other end of the line laughed at me. Yep actually laughed. His next comment was,"Listen, we don't do ANY customer installs of custom or non-subaru parts here, and besides, the second you turn one bolt and replace something with a non-stock part, your warranty will be voided." I was really miffed, and explained to him that this part was available through a Subaru dealer in NJ. He said that Subaru's stance was if it wasn't on the car originally, then it was a custom addition and the warranty is null and void. Man was I pissed, so what do I do, I call good ole SOA. After staying on hold for almost 30 minutes I am greeted by a lady that doesn't know anything giving the generic cookie cutter answers, and sounding verbatim like the dealer. "Sir, all I can tell you is that if you alter your car by placing a non-standard part on it your warranty is void. The reason for this is we have gone through extensive testing to make sure the 2.5 RS is safe and reliable in the state itis in from the dealer" I responded "Do you realize that this is an STi part" "A what part" "STi" "What is that?" At this point I ask for a Supervisor, and waited another 10 minutes on hold. When I finally get to her, I am even more shocked for you see, I used to work at JVC as a customer service rep, and I know how you listen in to a call. Well for some reason, these idiots didn't mute their headsets. SO, as I am talking to the Supervisor, I can hear two other people. One a guy who is like " We have his name and addess already, we can FLAG his VIN from that." and another lady that was laughing and chimed in "Man this guy is a total f*&^%$g idiot" Well, what came out of it after I had let her know that I could hear the other people on the line and that I would be writing a letter, was this.
1) She said they would flag my VIN and any warranty claims would be determined after making sure installed non-standard parts were not to blame.
2)She says SOA's stance is that STi is an aftermarket supplier.
3) They didn't know diddly about their product.
So, do you want to know the really bad part? I have a 98. Remember the front axle seals were packed with the wrong grease and they would leak and stink and make the motor smoke? Well when I went back to my Dealer (which by the way denied any knowledge of such recall) to have the problem repaired, actually logged on the receipt: aftermarket exhaust confirmed. Installed at midpipe to rear of car. When I ask why he had done that, he showed me his computer screen which had a flag... highlighted nonetheless... that said to check car and log all "INSTALLED NON-STANDARD PARTS" He said this info was sent back to SOA for warranty claim decisions.
So, do youself a favor and never deal with LOHMAN AUTO GROUP in PARSIPPANY NEW JERSEY. They are, hands down the worst dealership I have ever seen, bar none.
I hope this has shed some light on the subject, as I know they are flagging VIN's and Dealers have been told to log non-standard parts for warranty decision purposes.

Doug, I remember reading that on the mlist... unimagineable.

There was someone else who had a similar experience, and I also remember Jeff Denmeade who (perhaps justly) had his whole warranty cancelled after calling SOA to complain about wheel bearings and they found out he had raced in the '98 OneLap.

If it happened to me I'd get SEMA on their ass so fast it wouldn't even be funny.

Oh, and regarding the warranty length, I was wrong about the rust... only 5 years. Everything else is right.

I think I'll get it anyway and just take it off if I have to bring the car in. What a damn idiot. thanks for the info about SOA logging crap like that. I'll know not to call them.

hey everyone...just wanted to chime in on this thread. I too have dealt with idiot dealers that claim a new paint job will void a warrantee(exageration)...but there are good guys out there too. The service ppl at the dealer i use now, are not only first class in service and knowledge but they love souping up soobies as well. they are now even offering a performance division of the dealership where aftermarket goodies will be warranteed as well as not void any other warrantees. I think they're listed in the dealership section..but just in case they are Metric Subaru in Huntington, New York(Its in Long Island). anyone in the area that has dealer problems should check them out. They even told my about mike sheilds and a bunch of them autox as well.
so there are some good guys...
