Talking New car:1983 RX-7-Any info?

I have been looking ofr a nice beater car to drive back and forth to work and can also be fixed up and one of my friends just sold me his 83 RX-7 for $500, and it runs fine--I have seen it! The only problem known is that it the clutch needs to be bled every month(Anyone know how to correct that?)
Does anyone have any info and/or links to sites for the car and aftermarket stuff?

I know its a fun little beater car!

Had an '85 RX7, nice car. Good suspension even though it's a solid rear axle (Watts 4 link).

You probably have a leaking slave cylinder. Get a Haynes manual and then find a junkyard or pick-a-part and get another one.

Cool

Oh, the memories....
When I was 17, I got my dad's 83 RX-7 as a hand-me-down for my first car. They are a lot of fun and pretty low maintenance if you take care of it. Too bad you are not in Nor Cal. Here we got a 1st gen RX-7 stock series that runs at SCCA events.
I couldn't be much help with links, but I am sure you will get more feedback. I have discovered there are a lot of ex-RX-7er's around here. You might contact Trey Cobb, I believe his previous calling was RX-7 tuning.

Cool

SubieFl, yes, its definetly a leaking slave cylinder or bad clutch line. Here are some other web sites you might try,
RX7 club of Florida
Cheap Mazda RX7 parts
CorkSport
Excellent overview of how Rotary motors work

I have lots others, just ask if you need more.

Hey SubieFL!

I have owned 2 different 83 Rx7's, and still own one of them. Email me with any questions you may have, I can set you up with all the best resources.

As to the clutch thing, the slave cyl sounds about right... here's how to tell: If you are losing fluid (meaning the reservoir is down) it's either the slave cyl or the line. Both can be replaced/rebuilt cheaply and easily.

If you are NOT losing fluid, it's more likely the clutch master cylinder, which can also be rebuilt.

FYI try: www.rx7.com www.mazdatrix.com www.racingbeat.com

Contact me at either gearhead@pobox.com (home)
or dwarner@hazleton.f-k.com (work)

I actually rode in my friends 85 RX-7 the other day. He is always talking about how fast the car is, so finally I told him to take me for a ride and prove it. I must say the car does move, especially from about 4k rpm's on up to the redline. His is modified, racing clutch, lightened flywheel, headers, cat back exhaust, K&N replacement intake/airbox, koni adjustable suspention. So you can do quite a bit with it, have fun with yours.

I am really into the older subies! Baskcially, the RX is a streey legal ass whooping machine (drag racer) and for $500 it should not be passed up! They are RARE and have cool stuff like a LSD and center diff lock. Get it....
