Default Funnny Smell when backing up

Whenever I back up, I notice a funny smell fills the car. It sort of smells like something is burning....almost like burning rubber. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone have any idea waht it could be?

Default Burnt Smell

I spoke with the dealer here about just that when I test drove the 5MT Baja T. I've actually noticed it with all 4 of the Scoobies that I've driven new (3 Bajas and 1 WRX). He told me it's from the factory undercoating that is sprayed on quite heavily at the factory and subsequently drips on the exhaust piping. He says it should go away, but I would think if it hasn't within a reasonable time, take a look and see if something else is on the pipes. When I drove the 5MT Baja T the day it rolled off the truck, the undercoating was stil sticky so it may take a while to dry.

Subaru has been known to spray a coating thats called Cosmolene,.don't know if the spelling is correct. Most jap auto makers use this because of the salt waters they cross .Its a clear sticky film they spray on aluminum parts to keep corrsion down. And when it heats up you can smell it and might see spots under the car on the ground from when it heats up it drips. That stuff really ever dries. No need for worries,it takes awhile to burn off any resiude.Plus sometimes they get some on the exhaust even the rust proofing.

You are correct Baja Turbo. Cosmolene (I can't spell it either) is that stuff. Most GM cars have that crap all over them. I set up new Saturns alot and once they warm up they stink alot. There is also alot of slime on the exhaust parts for assembly ease. Sometimes a simple blast with the soapy wand at the car wash takes car of alot of the stink.

My Baja stunk for a month when I finally took a look to see if something was wrong. The PS pressure hose was leaking right on top of the engine. The dealer fixed the suspect banjo washer fitting. No more leak but I still have to wash down the engine.
