Angry Bad experience at Suby dealer!

What's up. I posted recently in the general forum about selling my S4 and getting either an STi or an Evo. The Evo, I've driven in and ridden in many times; my uncle owns one.

Anyway, I went to my local dealership, Major Subaru on Northern Boulevard in Long Island City, this past Friday and was not pleased.

First of all, it was at night, and I dealt with the sales manager; it seemed that all the other salesmen were not around.

I walked aorund the car, sat in it (WR Blue w/Gold BBS), and finally approached the sales manager, who was at his desk and did not bother to get up and great me.

I asked him if he had any STi's in stock. I was told that they have two in stock, and that order time would be 1-1.5 weeks and they would try a local dealer to swap with depending on my color choice.

I told him that I could get an STi now for $29,500 in any color of my choosing. The manager's response was: "That dealer is probably not looking to make any money at that price."

I told him that the dealer is Van Bortel Subaru (upstate). He then asked me how I would go about servicing the vehicle since the dealer is upstate. I told him that I would service the vehicle myself, and I have an auto mechanic friend that has worked on many Subarus.

At this point, I know the manager is full of sh--, because it shouldn't matter where you buy the car from to get service at a local dealership. Obviously, the dealer "favors" people who have bought the car from their dealer, but come on.

He told me that their firm price is $30,850, with no room for play. I asked him for a business card, and he said he did not have any available now. I said goodbye and walked out. All this time the sales manager was behind his desk, not even bothering to walk over to me.

Not a very good experience.

That's why I found it worth it to take the trip up to Van Bortel when I lived in NY... even if I could get it cheaper locally, it wouldn't be cheap enough to make it worth my while to deal with scumbags.

What ********, their loss.

Sidenote: How did u like your S4, I'm thinkin of buying one of them next, or an STi. I just really like the luxary and stealthyness of the S4. I want my next car to be somewhat incognito, I now drive a stage 2 SonicYellow Wrx and I'm slowly gettin sick of the looks and police harassment.

Default I will miss my S4, but it really isn't all that stealthy.

My S4 is a Nogaro Blue, which pretty much the same as Suby's WR Blue & Mitsubishi's Blue By You. They also make yellow S4's, in a deep yellow Audi calls Imola Yellow.

If you want the stealth, go with a black, silver, or dark blue S4. You might also want to consider a white S4 (I think there are two shades of white offered).

Are you looking at the new body style S4 or the old style? I don't know what colors they offer in the new style S4 though, what I stated above was based on the older (2000-2003) style S4.

I've test driven the new S4, and if you want a summary of the experience, just let me know.

Peace.

BTW, I hope I have a better experience at the Mitsu dealer.

I know it may be bit of a trip, but if you are looking for a friendly, knowledgable staff with great service department, check out Metric Subaru in Huntington NY (Suffolk County). Their phone number is 631.499.6777.

Quiet Man- thanks for the info. If i ever do sell the wrx, i'd be gettin a late 90s style. Or i'll just go w/ an STi and swap out for a wingless trunk and fog lightrs, and save the badges.

Please don't base your decision on one dealership, the STi is much more a performance minded automobile, and a great platform for an amazing car!

So they treat you bad, go buy it somewhere else and drive it by their dealership later to stick it in their faces...

If they dont want to make a sale, so be it

unfortunately since STi's are selling themselves now, that sales manager really didn't care about u. if u know anyone at work, friends, school, etc...with a subaru ask them where they bought it and ask them if they remember their sales guy name. Then go talk to that person and tell them who refered you and they might be a little better on the customer service. Hard to say

alot of places offer $50 rewards to customers who recommed another customer..doesnt mater if they buy a new or used car.
i know at my work(Carousel Toyota, Glen Mills/West Chester, PA), if i recommend a friend to come in and buy a car, and they actually buy it, i get $50, no questions asked..you could also split this with the person buying the car..they sometimes also helps them make up their mind(if 2 dealres quote the same price).
also, look for places that give free inspections/emissions tests when you buy a car, or service discounts.
my work gives 10% off all service, 2 free oil changes a year, and 5% off parts costs, and free towing if your within 10 miles of hte dealership, but only if you buy from my work.
i got my car from another local dealership, and they only offered 1 free inspection/emissions test..
the overall experience was not bad tho, i later went to visit the salesman, they really appreciate when customers return to say they had a plesant experience.. i did this and he asked if i wanted to take a WRX out for a spin(this was shortly after they came out).

i used to work as a lot aid/"salepersons helper" and when people say they dont have a business card..its because they dont have one..these things go extremly fast..i was shocked to see how long 2000 cards last..or, dont last.
salesmen/women appreciate when customers come back, they will recognize you by look mst of the time, but will have forgotten your name, and will most likely aoid contact untill after they figure out who you are(common to ask the service writer who took their appointment, or the parts guy, etc..) then will come up to you. often enough, they recognize the car..if its one thats not as common as all others(yellow, certian pinstripes, aftermarket leather/sunroof, etc..) they can figure out who you are.
every now and again i go back to where i bought my car, when it comes time for me to buy my WRX wagon, im gonna go right to the sales manager becuase we also dealt with him for a short time..the salesperson i had when i got my car left the dealership to move to used car sales(more money... learn to haggle the price down, lol, its marked up at least 25%..)
just sharing what i notice as an "insider" at a dealership.

Murray <--- soon to be suby tech.

Not so fast...

Quiet Man,

Did you get his name?

When I bought my RS from there in Oct. 1999, I dealt with Saiful, which happens to be pretty good salesman. I have kept in touch with him on/off; but not as of late...

Once the WRX was first introduced, I went to talk with Saiful and he was willing to do the best he can over invoice but his boss wasn't budging... He said MSRP + $2k.

I told Saiful, it was nice meeting you and doing business with my first RS but your boss is going to drive customers away. I spoke to his boss about Van Bortel, and he said then why not make the trip and buy from them? In any event, I was going to and pass by with my WRX and selling price but I held off because I just couldn't get over the bug eyes...

In any event, it's not an experience you should've dealt with... so it seems like the dealership is rottening itself and just has a bad reputation as of recent. It's too bad, they had some nice salespeople there. I think Saiful still works there...

One thing I do admit... their service dept. majorly SUCKS! I would not even think of going there for anything....

If you want and the dealer is a convenience to you, you can ask for him and tell him Elmer sent you. I take my business to Flemington and deal with Alex. It's been the best experience yet and I'll be buying my Legacy Turbo from them as well

Good luck.

Default I don't mind buying a car in NJ. As a matter of fact.......

I travel to NJ very often. Probably one-three times every two weeks (I have family in East Brunswick & Old Bridge, right near Englishtown )

I heard that a Suby dealer in Hicksville, LI was advertising STi's at around $29,500, but I didn't have a chance to see the advertisement. Maybe I'll stop by.

It seems very had to find either an STi, or Evo in Queens below MSRP and I haven't made up my mind yet. Still haven't test driven an STi yet, but did test drive the WRX October 2002.

BTW, I stopped by my local Mitsubishi dealer, Koeppel Mitsubishi on Northern Blvd, on Sunday and the experience was much friendlier. Although the salesman told me that they are selling all their Evo's at their MSRP price of $30,892.

I didn't even get the name of the Major Subaru sales manager.

But.

BigElm, I have met Saiful Islam before, actually last year when I test drove the WRX. Nice guy, but asked me during the test drive if I could handle a WRX, not knowing I had a Stage 2 S4 . I still have his business card stapled to my very old WRX brochure.

Anyway, I'll keep you guys updated. I'm in no rush but would like to change cars by the end of February. If it's an STi, we have to setup a GTG, maybe I can get some of my Audi/VW friends to come along too.

Later.
