Post h6 stuff/thoughts- maybe put in our cars?

I was just reading the press release on the subaru site regarding the new H6 engine. It's kind of interesting. We all know it's only .8" longer than the 2.5 engine, but what is kind of cool about it is that it does have somewhat of a "vtec" effect to it.

Looking through the specs, it has a variable intake valve manifold, that opens up at 3700 rpm to give the engine more air. This is like the "VTEC" on hondas, and also what Acura did to the CL Type S to get the extra horsepower.

I know many think that we can't dump this engine into an impreza, flywheel considerations and all. But considering that the outback limited uses essentially the same drivetrain and the same engine as the 2.5 rs, is it not feasible to say that the H6 could share the same mechanical pieces that the limited has?

I'm thinking, for some nasty power, take an H6 and through on a minnam stage 2, make these kind of interesting.

if you mean the variable length tuned intake, the SVX has this, and no, it's not really close to something that does actual variable valve timing like VTEC

I honestly have no idea how much of an improvement it makes in the SVX.. I would have to comment that this new H6 seems very similar to the svx's, and hopefully will inherit the good features. I can say that the svx H6 runs much much more smoothly than the 2.5H4, which makes it a very good feature for the luxury centric legacy.

I think if you want big power, there are simpler and more cost effective ways. Staying with an engine that is US spec and has available parts might be nice to some though.

I'd love to see more info from someone in the know.

this probibly should be moved to the technical forum.

Cool

yeah, I think they should turbo the H6 and put in a Legacy sedan. Reason for not putting it in the Impreza would be weight issue - apparently the H6 is way heavier (don't know exact figure). Factory turbo H4 should be good for the Impreza - looks like an '02 model in N/A will have it.

Yeah the variable length intake is also on the Isuzu engines (Rodeo and Trooper). Works very well I must add.

There is a problem with moving the 3.0l H6 to a RS because there is a different tranny mount, cause the H6 can only have an Automatic. Also as mentioned above the weight would hurt you.

Hello,

I keep hearing this about the H6 taking an automatic only but not a stick. HAve any of you actually looked at an auto tranny and a stick tranny and the mating surfaces with the engine? From looking at the 2.5 trannies, the old 1.8L FWD tranny, and everything else I've seen at the junkyard, I cannot fathom how to make the H6 work for Auto and not for Stick trannies. The two are so identical, they'd have to design a brand new autotranny SO THAT IT would be incompatible with a stick tranny.

Please, someone tell me that Subaru is not THAT stupid! Oh well... I hope no one gets injured, but I've got the junk patrol ready to snag the first wrecked H6 we can find and we have a (stick) tranny sitting around waiting to get bolted on...

keep the lookout. But they aren't shipping til fall so don't get ready yet. I think the bolt pattern is different on the H6, but since the ones at the auto-show didn't even have engines in em (they were only mock-ups), one won't know til they get their hands on one.
