Talking 1000 miles!

Alright... I feel accomplished now. Last night I went for a drive to celebrate to 1000 mile mark in the RS. All I need now is a little encouragement, because I've gotten used to listening for shift points between 3500 and 4000 rpm, and anything over that sounds like the poor thing is gonna explode!! Just tell me it's ok to rev over 4000 a few times, I'll start believing!

see, now those are the kinds of things I need to hear!! I'm just used to driving 60s and 70s cars that threaten to fall apart every time you pound them a little.

BTW Tom, did I ever email you back about a shifter? I'll take one! heheheh

The guy I bought my car from owns an impreza also and he told me not to worry about breaking it in. He didn't with his and he has over a 100,000 miles on his already. I tried to keep it below 4000 like the manual said but occasional ventures into that territory is fine.

Yeah, the dealer only said not to drive at the same speed/rpm for extended periods during break-in. Why is the 4000 rpm limit in the manual then? I would imagine that engine and brake components need -some- time to settle?

Personally I took mine out the first day and beat on it - later that night I found out the dealer lied to me (he told me they already came broken-in) so I went easy the next 950 miles, maybe only let it go to 5500 2 times during daily driving and tried to keep it below 4-4.5k.

As soon as I hit 1000 miles, I immediately started driving it like nuts (like my normal) and now I almost never shift below 5k unless I'm going to cruise in gear.

The only reason the dealer sets a break-in period is to make sure your rings seat (and I believe in changing oil 500-1000 miles to clear out the gunk). If you vary your rpms during break-in, 4000rpms doesn't matter. . Tear that **** up brotha', she won't blow up; as said before, bounce it off the rev limiter. Enjoy!!
