Angry SpeedTV Cutting WRC Coverage!

Ok, so maybe they are not cutting coverage all together but they are reducing the WRC programs from two hours to just one measly god-d@mn hour! I already sent them some feedback about this and gave them a piece of my mind. This is pathetic and unacceptable. They have hours and hours of programming for those no talent rednecks from Nascar but the WRC gets the shaft. Having a 3-day rally event summarized in one little hour is appalling. Let them know what you guys think and that they need to at least give it a two-hour block again.

Edit: Spelling corrected

I hope you did a spell check before you sent feedback to them.

I also hope that your feedback was rational. They love hate mail.

That said, this does suck. I tune in and watch the coverage. Why don't I have a Neilson box on my TV?

usually they do a 2 hour slot the first day, then one hour slots as reruns. they really can't afford that one extra hour once every other week? that's lame.

Welcome back to 2002, I guess. So much for their little experiment last year.

Didn't they do same day coverage for an hour a day in '02? Then they went to one wrap up show on the last day of the rally last year. Now a one hour Rally Wrap Up?

kai - i thought 2002 was the golden age of Speed's coverage of WRC. They'd run an hour a night Friday, Saturday, Sunday for a recap of the day's events, plus a half hour RallyXS (or something) on Thursday before the rally, then a one hour recap on Monday. Am I mistaken?

2002 rocked. They had 1-hour programming on Friday - Sunday.

I'm not the only one that remembers that, then.

Wow, I'm like... stunned.

I wish they would just drop it so someone like ESPN2 or OLN could just grab the UK version and play it unedited.

I thought it was 2002 where they only did the measly one hour recap like two weeks later. Was that 2001? Mea culpa.

I think they did all of the above. They had the same day coverage and then the Rally X-tra show that did the bare minimum highlights. I could be a year off, though. You've got me doubting myself now.

You kidding? In 2002 there was no less than FIVE hours per rally! They've gone back to pre-2001!

Their coverage kinda sucks anyways...listening to the rallies live was so much better and made watching it on speed suck in comparison.

And to think. The poll results for

"What type of racing makes for the best highlights/recap show?"
NASCAR : (28.85%)
CART or IRL : (7.81%)
Formula 1 : (15.69%)
World Rally : (39.46%)
Sports cars : (8.19% )

So lets cut it back! Add more Nascar!

No way, the best WRC was 98-2000! Only a half hour show but they were works of art! Those shows were really slick, I still watch the tapes over and over. The only thing wrong was that it was on TV 2 weeks after the event, but you can't beat the internet for results anyway.

IMO, 2002 was the worst, 1 hour a night was too much to get people to record for you if you don't get Speed, and the coverage was all fluff. There was not enough time to edit the footage and they just kept showing the same thing over and over to fill the time and it was mostly in car, it was lame.

And BTW I have friends that shoot for Speed and they say WRC ratings are terrible and it is a miracle it is still on.

Also that poll is not a good indication of the viewership on Speed as word got out to rally fans to vote for that and NASCAR fans don't know how to use the internet

I don't know why this is a surprise to everyone. Speed/Speedvision has been threatening to cut rally coverage now for years.

Personally, I wish they'd just do it to get it over with so we can get better coverage from someplace else. They're trying to run a business and nascar sells, rally don't.

Until the US quits being lazy and actually wants to hike a mile or two down a trail to watch cars coming around a corner and then disappearing around one...we're going to continue with the oval track garbage. They can sit in their seats and watch the entire race from start to finish without losing sight the cars.

in other words...don't hold your breath.

i can't remember if it was 2000 or 2001 that was the last year they had the simple one hour recap. I think it was 2000 though because i remember seeing a lot of rally coverage just after i graduated college (2001) and also remember seeing the huge "theoretically this or that could happen if x person does this and wins and y person does this and loses" as to who would win the title in the UK after the disqualification in Australia. The whole thing was a play on the presidential election malarkey. Come to think of it, it must have been 2001 since it would have been too soon after for this to take place in 2000.

You must not have watched many rallies that year......

And yeah....let's base the amount of coverage we make on whether it's an inconvenience to record or not. Come on, dude....

actually, we don't mind the hike, it's now that the SCCA won't allow us to make the hike anymore without closing the stage down completely.

If so, post the URL and I will put a sticky thread in www.evolutionm.net for even more response.

It is just a decision based on both the economics and demographics of the situation.

We have to accept that we are fans of a minor league form of auto racing in terms of fan base.

Oval track racing will always be bigger because of its simplicity of organization. You need a relatively small piece of real estate for your track.

As a result on any given weekend during the summer in every single county in the mid-western and southern states you will have organized oval track racing occuring. This gives you a level of fan participation creating a fan base that rally racing can not hope to ever compete with. It is difficult enough to set up a single race on a national level in rally racing... there is no way it is going to reach a county by county level and no way that it is going to ever be front page sports news.

I don't like it either... but it is reality.
