Default Stuck Key in Ignition

I have a 5 spd 1997 Outback Sport. I started up my car today and when I went to go pull out my key from the car, it wouldn't push in to come out. I looked at it and it looks like the key wasn't put all the way in. But the car still starts and everything but I can't get the key out. How do I remove the key?

....don't force it!!!!!

There was a thread, here recently, dealing with that specific issue.
The answer was posted by a realhonesttogod(so he said) locksmith.
Something about a small pin type release on the bottom of the cylinder....have to remove the plastic cover on the bottom of the collum.....Do a search....I wouldn't care to give you false info...

Found it....http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ight=stuck+key

It should be in the owner's manual. You don't have to remove the whole cover, only the round plug with a Phillips drive,
and push with something. The locksmith's post probably was in some other thread.

Yes that release lever is in the manual. But it is only for automatic vechicles and not for manual cars. How do i remove my key with out going to the dealership.

Just realized that lever is a part of AT shift interlock, it manually releases a solenoid that MT doesn't have. Always thought it was for mechanically releasing the key from the cylinder. What you probably need to do is to remove the lock cylinder (not the complete lock). The manual shows the cylinder come out to the outside, but doesn't tell how. It shouldn't be very hard because replacement cylinders are sold in many places.

I'm also having this problem. I have a 1997 impreza outback MT, and the key won't come out. Tried turning the wheel back and forth. Since it's not an AT, it doesn't have the release switch like the manual says.

Trying to get the key out for so long, I forget if I need to have the clutch in.

Any ideas? Has anyone fixed this problem.

Thanks,
Rusty

Default key stuck

I have a 97 automatic impreza outback sport and the key is stuck also. I read the manual and did what it said but cant seem to find any kind of switch after I took out the plug. Any suggestions? The steering isnt locked either now when I shut it off.

I have a '93 Impreza, automatic. I had the same issue, but there is a little switch under the actual shifter handle that releases the key. If you remove the console around your shifter, there is a tiny black box at the base of the shifter on the right side with a small button on the bottom side. There should be a tiny strip of metal that clicks the button when you go to turn the car off, but you can manually click that button when you have the key as far off as it can go, and it will release the key to finish turning and be removed.
