Default Tachometer conversion

I have 96 Impreza MT without a tachometer. How should I go about putting one in? Can i just get a gauge cluster out of a car with a tach and swap it in?
Does my car have the cable for the tach already running to the dash and its just not plugged into anything?
If i can just use another gauge cluster, does it have to be the same year, or can I get a newer one?

I would imagine you would be able to use any of the gauge clusters from 93-96. Just make sure your ECU has the engine speed output pin before proceeding (I can't imagine why it wouldn't). You will just have to get a wire up to the gauge cluster and you will be golden; if you are lucky, the wire is already there, just not in use.

just looked at a service manual for my car. The wiring diagram shows no wire for the tachomoter for years 95-96. There are wires for the tach for earlier and later years though. Any one have any ideas about this?

You can swap in a cluster that has a tach. It'll work jus-fine!

Before I swapped a new cluster in, I added a tach to where the OEM one should be. The terminals are right there on the circuit trace to tap into. Takes a couple hrs to do if you're working slow and methodical. Only about an hour to swap the cluster...unless you want to keep your original speedo/odo.

Beware of when SOA went to electronic speed sensors. You'll have to account for that if you still have a speedo cable.
