Default IMPREZA Rear Cupholder (JDM vs. AllSubaru's Black Forester model -- pics inside)

Big props to Jamie (aka "SubieGal" at AllSubaru.com) She is by far one of the nicest vendors I've dealt with yet - even catered to my "canuck-specific" requests

Anyways, I decided to go with the Flat Black-painted Forester rear cupholder sold by AllSubaru.com because it protrudes less into the passenger footwell than the JDM model does when folded up -- thus less bumping around back there as passengers shift around in the back seat.

Since I come from the JDM model, and had both on hand -- I decided to snap a few pics for all those wondering how these two compare
You should be able to see the part #'s in the pics for each unit as well. Note that the JDM one requires you to drill holes in your existing "center console rear plate piece" -- though they do provide a very accurate template for you to do this.

Here goes - enjoy the pics!

Here's the two cupholder units in a side by side comparo:

FRONT (CLOSED) -- side by side

FRONT (OPENED) -- side by side

SIDE PROFILE (CLOSED) -- side by side

NOTE: the blue rubber grips and the WRC stickers are a personal touch that I added - pls don't flame me for them.

continued in the next post..

I decided to have some fun and held some:
REAL-WORLD BEVERAGE HOLDING TESTS!

Here's the two units "attempting" to hold an "evian" like beverage container:

Winner = JDM in this case.

Here's the two units "attempting" to hold a "thermos" like coffee mug

Winner = neither in this case.

Here's the two units "attempting" to hold a "thermos" like cup (which comes as part of a large hot water container that I bring along with me skiing)

Winner = ADM in this case (which is what I use it for anyways, so this test mattered the most for me)

(continued in next post..)

Finally, here's the AllSubaru-painted Forester cupholder installed:

CLOSED (the camera flash makes the colour seem more off than it really is in this pic)

OPEN (you can see the colour match is actually quite good in this pic)

Keep in mind that I don't think EITHER rear cupholder would hold a beverage sufficiently during SPIRITED driving - they're more for when you're stopped for some reason IN the car and the outside environment is somehow unpleasant (ie. skiing, torrential downpour, etc.) it's nice to give your rear-seat passengers somewhere to set their cup of tea/hot chocolate/coffee etc.

Hope you enjoyed the pics!

Thanks for the review. You are right, the cupholder doesn't look like it can hold anything bigger than a soda can too well while driving around.

How does it fit with the rear seats folded down?

what do you mean?
it's in between the seats... seats do not make contact with this item at all as it's on the back of the center console?

As jamie said - no worries using either cupholder unit with the seats folded down.

Both units fold outwards from the back of your center console unit -- which -- is practically sitting on the floor anyways - way below where your seats fold down to.

The Forester unit does have the benefit in that it folds down lower, so that it's almost supported by the center "hump" when folded out.

cheers,

you're very welcome! hope you enjoyed the pics.

BTW - depending on interest, I may put the JDM cupholder up for sale some time.

I think the blue rubber inserts I added would go great with the blue interior carpet that comes with '04 Sti's. I'll remove the WRC stickers though.
