Post Unfiltered air question.

Yesterday as I was driving I noticed a strange noise coming from under the hood, being that I was almost home I decided to just wait untill then to check it out. As I was pulling up my driveway my car started to shudder........then it proceeded to stall and shut off. I then popped the hood to see what was wrong......I noticed that one of the clamps from my JC Sports intake was missing and the intake tube had slipped away from the (throttle body?) anyways I was wondering if that 5-10 seconds that the car had unfiltered air coming in might have hurt something, I know it might be a dumb question but I know that the filter is there for something and its very important for dirt not to get into the internals. Thanks for any feedback you may give.

Nah, you're fine. The filter is there to prevent long-term wear from small particles. A few minutes isn't really going to hurt anything, unless you drove through a sand storm .

Yep I agree you are fine. Being a boat owner I can tell you that boats don't even use an air filter. They use a flame arrester whose sole purpose is to stop the flames from an engine backfire from coming back into the engine compartment. If you look at the flame arrester you can see that the passages are quite large and that dust would be able to enter the engine easily. It doesn't happen though as how often do you have dust on the water - never. As long as you didn't drive through a thick dust cloud you are just fine.

Useless trivia... an engine can digest ~5 grams of foreign material before it is destroyed
You're fine with you little problem... a rallycross without a filter is a different story

Thumbs up

Race cars with velocity stacks don't have filters. Also, professional dragsters don't have filters. Of course, those engines get rebuilt frequently. You're fine.
