Default 17's with a 16" spare any damage

Just wondering if it is ok to run a 16" spare with 17" around the rest of the vehical. The reason why I am asking is, I had a friend who fried his transmission on his jeep grand cherokee (full time 4x4) because he drove with a smaller tire (spare) when he got a flat. I think there was an 1" or 2" differance between the ones he was runnin and his spare. Does anyone have any knowledge on this, I am getting some new 17" rims and am wondering if I can use my 16" steel for a spare.
Thanks

I am no expert, but generally on an AWD or 4wd vehicle what matters is the overall wheel diameter... not necessarily whether the rim is 16 or 17"...

If you run tires with different tread deapth you run the risk of damaging or ruining you transmission. Let a lone different rim sizes.
