Default Falken ST-115 VS Firehawk SZ50... settle it for me

I know there have been threads like this before but I will do it again for my own sake.

The two tires i am considering are

1) 225/50ZR16 Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP

2) 205/55R16 Falken Azenis ST-115

they will be going on stock wheels. (2002 WRX)

let me have your opinons.

A couple things I am concerned about are treadwear and ride noise.

I have heard that the ST-115's get really noisy when they start to wear (which seems to be somewhere around 15-20k mi)

Luke seems to pimp the firehawks here so which one??

Have at it

Thanks

it's now considered "pimping" a tire by telling people that it offers excellent ride quality, low road noise, good tread life and alot of performance

call me a pimp then

just trying to get a rise out of you

seriously though are the falkens crap compared to the firehawks?

my big concern really is which one will last longer. I do mostly freeway driving and don't race the car or beat it up very much

If I were going to get Falken's (and I am) I would get either the Azenis or the Beta FK-451's

I have ST115's on my GC6. So far I have to say I like them a lot. I have never driven the Firehawks, so this may not be much help.

I have driven the ST115's in the dry, the wet and even a little snow, and they have never let me down. They are very progressive for a street tire and are not noticably noisy. I have had them on for about 6 months now, with no racing, but lots of hard street driving.

I would give them a big thumbs up and would buy them again without much hessitation.

I recommend ST-115's.
But why don't you want them in size 225's?

I've had mine on for about two weeks. Size 225/45/17.

For a performance tire they are VERY quiet.
They never squeal on hard cornering either.

As someone mentioned above, they break away very progressively.

Great tire for the money.

The Falken 451's would be a better tire to compare with the Firehawk....the ST-115's aren't in the same class...they are a luxo-touring tire

They are categorized as an Ultra-high performance tire, comparable to the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712.

I just mounted some ST-115 this past Wednesday. I have contiextremecontact on for the winter. I went ahead and mounted st-115's on the car until last night to get a feeling for them and to put some time on them before rebalancing them (tire barn static balanced them ) At first they were VERY floaty put are getting much better. We did a rode trip ~300miles. But I can tell the steering is going to be much lighter than the 215-17" conti's I had on during the summer (I have some 205-16 conti's for winter now) They are very quiet and a smooth ride compared to the my old conti's and some other tires I drove on in our local group. I think you will be happy with them, I am.

I'm with Scotty - if the Falken ST115s are comparable to the Kumho 712s, get the SZ50EPs hands down. The 712s are nothing to write home to Mom about, and the SZ50EPs will run circles around them.

Hell, even if the ST115s are better than the 712s, I still say get the SZ50EPs. They really are great, great tires. I had the original (non EP) SZ50s on my Mustang, and was so impressed with them that I got them (the EP version) for the Subaru, too. I got somewhere around 33,000 miles out of them on the Subaru, and I'm far from a gentle driver. They never saw any auto-x action, and only saw one day on track (a rainy day at Watkins Glen). They're quiet, smooth-riding, great in wet or dry, wear well, and look pretty cool, too. I never noticed any noise problems with them, and I wore them down into the wear bars before I replaced them.
