Default Is it just me or S03's howling gets louder as it wears?

I commute on my cooper-s with very quiet tires...i got home and
took out my WRX the other night which I hadn't driven for
over 3 weeks. It runs on S03's. the howling noise of my
WRX is phenominally louder compared to my MCS to the
point that I thought maybe i had a flat and pulled over.

Are your S03's getting louder as they wear? Seems like
im to the point of about 65% tread left right now. i can't
believe i was driving in such road noise inside the
cabin before.

i must be getting older too...

I think so, but if you warm them up to about 90 DEG F they should quiet down a little bit.

When I put on the Blizzack WS-50's on 16" wheels it was like I had a different car-- a Lexus or at least a Camry.

Mine got louder after they got a few thousand miles on them. My Nokian WRs are like a luxo tire to me now, with the smoother ride and no (or very little) noise.

If you can hear your tires, your exhaust isn't loud enough

My S03's got so loud I thought I had a wheel bearing problem.

They are now my autox tires.

thats what I think. Check for cupping, tire pressure, and if any wheel weights fell off. You might have to rebalance them.

Perhaps the fact that you hadn't driven the WRX in over 3 weeks caused them to become slightly flat-spotted?

thanks for the feedback. i roll my car forward/aft every 2 weeks
to rid flatspotting. the treads are wearing pretty flat and
does not seem to have any weights missing (still on my first
set on my SSR's) no vibration or thumping noises.

i use a NUR RR catback....i think my exhaust is loud enough.
but during the winter time, i use the silencer so im now hearing
other noises. and i think the low temps do make the tires
stiffer causing it to transfer more roadnoise into the cabin.

i should get some quieter tires after the s03's are worn out.
i want to enjoy my stereo now.

what's a good trade off tire between noise and performance?
Im thinking ES100's or Ziex512's.

ES100s are superhowling tires, especially when worn.

If you want a good quality tire that is quieter than the S03, look at the RE750. You'll really like that tire.

I've run both the T1S and PZero Nero and both are quiet. Both very good wet/dry hi-po tires, both as a bonus also happen to be on the light side.

thanks for the info on the ES100. almost went the
wrong way.

yah, apparently howling noises are just
one of the trade-offs to a high performance tire.

guess i'll have to throw in a louder subwoofer then if i wanna
enjoy my stereo.

i have s-03's on my ssr's as well. i recently swapped the ssr's out for the stock rims w/re92's -- total night & day difference in terms of noise level. on long trips, those s-03's will be staying home.
