Default moving to slc...

once my girlfriend graduates we are planning to make the move from dirty jersey out to SLC. was wondering if anyone could make some recommendations where to look for housing, big employers etc. I've been working for hte last 3 years in pharmaceutical advertising doing art direction and some macintosh IT work. can't wait to get out there! i miss the mountains so much.

well, as far as housing goes, it depends what you want. if you want a big new house, you'll mainly be looking in the south part of the valley, which is a ways from downtown. if you want to live closer to downtown, you're likely looking at more $ for a smaller and older house but it's the location that counts in the market.

historically speaking, east-side living (east of I-15) is preferred. there is more crime and gang activity on the west side (west valley city, kearns, magna) than on the east side (sugar house, holladay, sandy). getting north & south in the valley isn't too hard, but getting into town from the west can be slower going. plus, on the east side you can live right against those wonderful mountains (if you have the $)!

i can't help you much with that area of the job market. good luck!

oh, yeah, the salt lake tribune just ran an article on the utah housing market the other day. click here to see it. the graphic gives you a good sense of where the values are.

gang activity? is there alot of crime going on out there? I've lived in philly for 5 years and north jersey but never had any "gang" issues other than the bikers with the angels and the pagans.. but they never gave me any trouble.

how about scoobie thefts. right now jersey is a hotbed for wrx's.. terrible place to own a nice car. Thank you so much for the info! I'm probably going to try to rent something for a few months until we get situated with work and what not.

Im really just looking to get out of the hectic rat race that the east coast is all about. I've been on a few trips to snowbird and couldnt think of a greater place to live. thanks keep it coming.

You forgot about the biggest gang here in salt lake...

Hint: They have their HQ here down town in the tallest building in the city. They charge a fee to be a member (10% of your income) else you can't get into their version of "heaven"... They will knock on your door two-by-two weekly trying to get you to join... As soon as you move in, your name will go up on a board in the local wardhouse as a potential "target". Your first housewarming meals will be full of chicken and green jello for dessert.

/me shuts up now.

Hahahaha, gang activity in SLC....I love it....this is one of the smallest towns I've ever lived in, but infymus is right, the most dangerous gang members wear suits and nametags

The East side of the valley is more young perhaps, but not any more or less safe than the west side. If you are looking to get into a younger, more "hip" area, I would look into Sugarhouse, or the 9th and 9th (9th south 9th east) area.

Art direction eh? I am in school for graphic design and intern for a company called Singlepoint. I assist with cleaning up website code and what not. My supervisor may have some leads for you....I'll see what I can dig up for someone as experienced as yourself

Not really any horrible car theft issues here to speak of, and we have a hugely active SCCA region....check out www.utahscca.com

I also have a seasons pass at the Bird.....could always use another person to ride with.

When are you planning on coming out to look for housing...be glad to give you a tour of the city via GC8 as long as I dont have to much homework.

Do you post in a local forum in NJ? Seek out ScoobySlack...he just moved to NJ from Chicago...but he used to live here in SLC.

You know, if polygamy were legal, it might be worth joining that SLC cult/gang

Hey, there's plenty of non-sanctioned action going on.

SLC has a great Subie scene, Cobb just made it even more so.

That's Colorado City, not SLC.

I live in probably the worst part of town, and feel perfectly fine parking my wrx outside. Only issues were with neighbors, when they were firing off rounds every weekend during their parties, so just keep clear of redwood road south of north temple for a few miles. I'm building a house right now, and the market and prices for house are comparable to most regular cities.

I'm with ibis, sounds like the 9th and 9th area is for you. That's where all the coffee drinking artsy dorks are. Not talking smack, just sayin... you do use a mac The bad part about that part of town is if you get a garage chances are it will be so small you can't work in it.

Any car theft around here seems to be focused on civics to get their ECU's. I was so surprised when I went to Hawaii and everyone used the club. Nobody here uses it because you just don't need it.

Tons of nice people around here willing to hang out or help out.
Holy crap got to go, I think I hear my roommate's bimmer. IT LIVES !! maybe

Having lived in Chicago for many years as well as Phoenix, Ft Worth and growing up about an hour from NYC... the notion of a "bad" part of SLC is kinda funny.
