your best (and most durable) bet is to get them powdercoated. not all paint/body shops do it. just check your phone book and call around for the best price. i was quoted $85 by a guy in my town; this included taking the old finish off the rims.

Go for a powdercoat. Shouldn't cost you more than 50 per wheel...well in California.

I mentioned this before a while back. I painted my alloys myself on my Legacy Turbo( black to match the car, but the outside is still aluminum, ala GVR4) last fall and after cleaning them good, one coat of primer, and one coat of gloss black, they held up surpisingly fantastic throughout the winter with harldly any chipping.

I just did them over last week but this time I splurged for a can of clear as well. They turned out fantastic( to me anyway). A fella I know with a Mustang asked me a few nights ago where I had them powder coated. When I told him I did it with the help of Dollar General, he couldn't believe it. All for a grand total of(including the clear), about $6.00

Give it a try. At least if you don't like the way they look, you are only out $6.00, no big whoop. On the flip side, if you do a decent job and you like it, drive it like that until they start chipping( if they even start to). You may end up saving quite a few bucks.

If you want to paint them, why not powdercoat them? The finish is better and the coated surface is much tougher than just painting it..

Powdercoating is good, but I'm in the habit of warning people that they need to find a good shop that knows what the term "surface prep" means. Check out my site and click on Wheels and Tires in the top frame. That's what the work of an inept powdercoat shop looks like. I'm currently in the process of polishing them, and then I'll have them powdercoated again, with clear.
