Default Leather Package....did I get jipped?

I had originally ordered my Baja Turbo w/ Leather Package from the factory. The dealer found what I was looking for in another state and had it shipped in so I wouldn't have to wait for the factory to deliver.

I was disappointed when it came because, although it was leather, it was entirely black. The leather package as pictured in their brochure and on the website shows a two-tone black and medium-grey....which I like a lot better.

Since the dealer went to a lot of trouble to find what I was looking for and I didn't have to wait for the factory delivery, I didn't complain.

When I originally ordered the Leather Package, I didn't look closely to what came with it. I just noticed today on the website that the Leather Package comes with 6-way power driver's seat with lumbar support and dual-mode heated front seats. I didn't get either of these. Now I feel jipped.

Should I bring this to the attention of the dealer and see if they'll switch out the seats? Or am I S.O.L.?

I would bring it up with the dealer. If the dealer is in business to keep customers comming back, then they will be more than willing to hear you out. The seats that don't have heaters, and power are the leather/cloth ones. If you got a 5mt that is the only option to my knolage. But I am no expert.

BajaNut....I didn't realize there were two different leather packages. Mine is the one like you described...leather with cloth centers. I'm assuming the packages are differently priced. I'll check with my dealer to make sure that I didn't pay for the more expensive package. -- Thanks BajaNut

It sounds like you got a regular baja turbo with aftermarket leather and not factory leather. Do you have the window sticker?
The premium package should be listed there.
Good luck,

Your right it sounds like it was an add on leather. When i worked for Nissan the Xterra didn't come with leather or it wasn't an option. If someone wanted leather, they would strip the seats, door panels and have leather installed.

My 2004 with the sportshift automatic has the two tone type with the heaters, and 6 way. The center part is perforated too.

OK, what does your car have? The Baja-T's Leather Package should have: Baja Turbo Leather Package: Medium Gray perforated leather-trimmed upholstery with Black Vinyl Bolsters, Baja logoembossed front seats, 6-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, dual-mode heated front seats. Package applicable to Baja Turbo with automatic transmission.

That's directly from Subaru. If you paid for an '04 Baja-T with the factory leather package (MSRP $26,845) then I would definitely complain. If that's not what you got, then your dealer flat lied to you. But if you're happy with what you got and what you paid, then all's well. Just a metter of what most important to you. I'm going to be waiting until April before I get my Baja-T that I ordered at the beginning of the month. They can swap yours out for a REAL leather package car if you want, assuming they said that you were getting an '04 Baja-T Leather Package car and not a custom job.

Based on everyone's feedback, I'm definately going to complain. I don't think my current leather seats are after-market because they have the Baja embossed label. But, it's probably the package that BahaNut described. I paid $28K and the dealer led me to believe that that was a good deal. This was before I found this forum and saw what kind of deals others were getting. I did get a lot of options (automatic, 6-disk changer, premium stereo, woofer, tweeters, sport lights, hard bed-cover, trailer hitch, hood deflector, bumper guards, splash guards, bed extender, premium floor mats, and the so called leather package). But I pretty much paid full price too. They only budged $500 on the sticker price. They said they were only alloted four turbos this year, so if I didn't buy it, someone else would. Little did I know that the Baja wasn't selling so well. I guess that's what I get for being an impulse buyer and not doing my homework. Don't get me wrong, I still love my Baja and I would buy it again, but I just don't like finding out that I was dupped.

Looks like you got jipped by the dealer but not by the Baja. The leather seats on the automatic turbo is a $1000 option, so I would definantly complain!!!

I hate it when dealiers do this to good and honest people. It is what gives Subaru a bad name. I think that SOA should crack down on this and make more dealiers be more honist and friendly. I know that some other companies have done that in the past. I know of 2 (1 that I used to live near and one that I live near to now) have a teriable service department and they try their best to give each and every customer the shaft and hope that nothing comes of it. I have written a complaint about the one that I used to live near because I used their service department and they really screwed me over. Since then the dealiership has changed ownership 3 times. They made me pay for a pint of touch up paint in advanced and they never ordered it. I went in 4 visits and 3 months go by before I finally got the paint. Ironically The car got wrecked 1 week aftwards. but that is enough of my ranting and raving. So my recomendation would be to go back to the dealiership and go straight to the manager and take it up with him/her and forget the salesperson. And send a hand written letter to SOA explaining the situation and how you feel about it in clear and non-emiotional as possible.

Premium comes with 6-spoke silver wheel, instead of gray painted 5-spoke wheel. That wheel is only available with Premium. I guess your dealer just came up with leather package themselves. They didn't call it "Premium," did they? If so, then they lied to you as Premium is defined by SoA... Sorry this happened, but I hope you good luck.

Default Premium Package

Actually, only the Forester uses the term "Premium" to describe its leather equipped model. The Baja Turbo's package was simply the "Leather Package". If they told you that you would be getting a Baja Turbo with Leather Package, and you got whatever it is you have, then yes, either they flat lied, or the factory goofed big time. Either way, if you feel slighted, wave the BS flag. Try the dealer's sales manager first, then the gen. manager, the Subaru of America. If none of them will help (which I doubt) you have a legal case of misrepresentation.

It sounds like they gave you the new MY04 lesser cloth/leather option and led you to believe leather means leather period.

As i understood it at the beginning of the MY03's, there was only one option, the black leather trim with perforated grey leather asses. This may have changed with the later MY03's that were produced with more color choices such as the Blue. Then definately with the intro of the MY04 they made the all leather an upgrade option with a the base being what you ended up with.

I'd definately bring it to their attention and see what you can get done.

I actually prefer the OBW VDC's leather which feels like real leather. The Baja leather, because of the perforation, feels like those fake leather members only jackets. Regardless, i have nothing to complain about the comfort, its great. I just wish they'd offered heated seats as an option.

Default Seats

If it's the leather/cloth seats, then that's even worse. The "leather"/cloth seats have no leather at all, just black vinyl sides. I still have no idea where they found what you have. Do your seats have the cloth centers or is it leather all around?

My seats are what you have described..."leather/cloth"....and if it's really not leather, then I definately got screwed. I'm going to the dealer this week. At this point I'd be satisfied if either they swapped out the seats and gave my what I ordered, or just give me the refund.

Default MSRP

Assuming $1000 for the hard bed cover, your MSRP for your car without the leather package would be $28,085. Now, that's not bad for what you said you paid, but if they told you that it was a leather package car, then it's still a shady deal. The same car with the leather package would be $29,385.

Default Edmund's Price

According to Edmunds, again if you add $1000 for the hard cover, the True Market Value price (Avg Sale Price) is $27,420, so you didn't really get ripped, but hey, the deal was for a "Leather Package" Turbo, not a souped up Reg Turbo.

You can only get a Turbo baja with leather seats only if you have an automatic. You get medium grey perforated leather trimmed upholstery with vinyl leather bolsters. The seats are not completely leather. The 6 way power is optional except for baja turbo with leather package. It sounds like you got aftermarket leather interior from the dealer if you have a manual transmission.

Actually, he got the standard cloth/vinyl seats. And the power seat only comes with the leather package, everyone else gets the manual seat.

GOOD NEWS!!!

I talked to the dealer and they said they would look into switching out the seats and steering wheel. If they can't do it, then they'll reimburse me.
YEA!!!

Default Heaters?

Are they going to hook it up with the seat heaters? Either way congrats on their integrity!

Good to hear. You paid for 6-spoke wheels too (assuming they are more). I personally like gray 5-spoke on regular turbo.

I just talked to the dealer again today. They're still looking into what it will take to switch out the old seats and put in the new. This would include installing the heater switches, changing the steering wheel, wheels, etc. I've told them that I want ALL or NOTHING. If they can't give me the "complete" leather package, then I want the refund. I'd be happy either way. If they give me the refund, I'm sure I'll figure a way to spend it.

Hey, sounds like you got a pretty good dealer that admits their fault and work to correct. That's what I call "earn the trust" which is hard to find these days. Kudos for the dealer!
