Default Ruined Tire... need advice

Hi guys-

I'm a bit of a n00b, so I apologize for the question if it seems stupid...

Today I noticed my driver's side rear tire was running really low on air, so I took it in to a tire place to fix the flat. Long story short, they came back and said it couldn't be repaired as it had been driven too long flat.

Then they said that because it's AWD and safety issues, all four tires must be changed at the same time.... for $800+!!! (they are high performance tires) Or I could get some ghetto tires for much cheaper.

I'm looking to sell my car and the other tires seem fine (about 50% tread I would say). I can't afford 4 new tires, even ghetto ones. What I am wanting to know is: is it okay to purchase one new tire and have the rest at ~50%? Is it unsafe like they are saying?

Cliff Notes: Tire place says tire was driven "flat"too long, must get FOUR new tires because of AWD. I want to know if I can buy just one new one, and run the other 3 at 50% tread, and is it unsafe?

You can buy a new tire and then have it shaved down to even thread with the other tires.

Really? I haven't ever heard of this... where can I get something like this done? Do tire shops do that?

How low was it? It would have to be really low, and driven for a long time to damage the tire. They might be pulling your chain, they sound eager to sell you four new tires.

I thought the same thing, but then I took it to another place to get a second opinion, and he said the exact same thing, only in greater detail.

Both places considered it bald.
