Thumbs up Subaru may have an ECU recall in near future

Subaru may be forced to recall MY2000 ECUs in certain models. The recall is based on the fact that Subaru "fudged-up" on OBDII idle monitoring and fuel trim. Another fact is that the "check engine" light is notactivating like it should.

In typical fashion, Subaru will probably fight the recall but CARB will force the issue. If CARB does not get the action that it is looking for, it may not certify any 2001 cars for sale and delay release of the next model year.

Right now it is a wait and see issue. CARB must re-test specific 1999-2000 vehicles to see if OBDII is monitoring correctly. The problem is poor idle quality and the fact that 1999-2000 models will sometimes have high idle speeds for no obvious reason.

I'll keep all of you posted regarding this issue.

Thanks, ARG

It seems like I can remember people posting about problems like that. Of course I have a 99, and I doubt they'll ever get around to the MAF thingy.

Unhappy

Well, I've already had the ECU replaced under warranty for my wife's Y2K Legacy along with an O2 sensor. This problem has happened to a few people on the board already.

I wish they'd replace the MY99's MAF and go with something a little less sensitive or fragile.

It's really odd how CARB (note the CA part of that one stands for California) can effect the entire coutry's release date of a vehicle. One state objects and they have to hold back...

Personally, I think these bastards should pay less attention to the exhaust fumes that come out of an aftermarket turbo'd car and more attention to the fact that they can be spending this money on machines that will actually FIX the atmospheric problems. Go after those f**king minivans that blow HEAVY blue smoke out their exhausts, will you?

Exclamation

Heh, I was wondering what the problem was with my MY99 getting a high idle once in a while. It'll hit 1,500 and stick there for a minute or so and then it'll drop back down to where it should be. It'll take me 30 minutes of driving carefully (taking my foot off the gas completely when shifting) for it to drop back down again. Weird. I'd love to see a ECU recall for MY99 as well.

Mine sometimes will not start after I have turned off the car for 5-10 minutes. It has to crank over about 15-20 times then it starts.

That doesn't sound right, I'd take it back to the dealer!
