Post Anyone driven a Ford Focus ZX3?

I know this is a Subaru board - I drive an RS. This community has answered many of my queries about our own slice of automotive heaven, so I thought I'd see if anyone had good or bad feedback on the ZX3, which a friend of mine seems ready to buy.

His budget is low, 1K down, able to do $200 over 48 months to buy it. His other choice is a Ranger, which bums me out since I'm not a truck guy.

I only know about the Focus Rally car, after Colin jumped ship from Subaru (duh!) to the Ford team.

Alex/Robert: If this is too off-topic, remove it with no hard feelings

tks all

SF

Many of us here said that if not an Impreza, Focus ZX3 is an excellent alternative. Remember, this is iClub....not the "other" Clubxx. We're not gonna chase you out!

It depends were you live. In Europe they have a 4 door ZX3, but alas we not apply to this car. BTW you can get a ZX3 with no options for about 12K and one with AC, ABS, Cruis, CD player & Tilt/telescope for about $13-13500

The ZX3 runs zero to sixty in the mid sevens from what I can remember. I think the number you are quoting is for the base engine, not the Zetec that is standard in the ZX3. The car is one hell of a bargain, fully loaded it's 13 grand. I watched STR tear one apart so they could build a dragster out of it, and I was very impressed with the way the car is put together...very german. I love my subie, but the focus is a damn good little car.

If your friend wants the tilt/telescope get a print of the Ford web site b/c the dealers will tell you that you cant have that option since they still donít know about it.

Whoa there Rally Man! I've posted on the focus club board a couple times, but I don't own one, sorry. I do think they are kind of neat though. The reason I was checking out that site (www.club-focus.com) is because a friend of mine has one, he's planning on coming out to an autocross, so I was looking for info about them.

The 9.3 sec. zero to sixty is what I saw in the new Car & Driver. But they have been wrong before.

How does the ZX3 compare to the 4-door ZTS (I think that's the designation)? I drove one of those (brother-in-law's), and found the suspension really spongy. The quality of the car was much higher than I expected on the inside -- the steering wheel was nice,
but I wasn't a huge fan of the shifter feel (rubbery). Much better than any other Ford I've been in though... is the ZX3 quite different?

I have driven two ZX3's. One I drove back to back with a 00' Civic Si. Lets just say that it would be a hard choice if they were within $1,000, but with the ZX3 pricetag sitting something like $3,500-$400o Less there is no reason on this planet to get a Si.

Yes the Zx3 is no fireball, but it never "lacks" power. the Si stock is not happy with about 2/3 of the RPM range and makes power in a even smaller portion of the range. The Si also rides worse than my Dad's F250HP 4X4. A trip up the local freeway at 75mph convinced me of the comlete stupidity of the Si's ratios in the real world. It was turning 4K rpm and quite lound with tire hum and wind noise. The ZX3 turned a reasonable RPM, and was very quiet. The interior of the ZX3 is very room for its class, and the rear seat is simply wonderful for A. not having 4ds, and B being a small econobox.

Oveall I found it to be the Impreza's equal in most areas, but lacks AWD, and the wonderfull attributes of a flat 4. I haven't drivn a 2.2L powered Subaru so I can't really say how it compares to the basic impreza, which it is is the closest too.

Get the Focus! It is so superior in auto-x, really cool. My wife gets rid of the new beetle and gets a ZX3, half the money, better performance and a usuable trunk.
Best bang for the buck.
2 thumbs up..

The Focus is a really fun car to drive, not as much as an RS, but still very cool. It handles well and is pretty quick. It is a lot like vtec since the power is in the higher rpms. A dealer ship around town modifies them with aftermarket parts and then they look great. I have seen several with 18's, lowered , with a bodykit. You can also get turbo and SC for them too.

A steal at $12k

I thought the ZX3 was an escort and not based on the Focus model. Either way, my friend owns the Escort ZX3, I think it's a 98 or 99. It's a fun peppy little car. The engine is a little sketchy at high rpms. It is a good bang for the buck. Might also consider a Hyundai Tiburon or the Focus hatchback.

I know this may seem a little odd, but make sure he drives it in the rain before he gets it.
I was going to get one, was out on a 2 hour test drive, and it began to rain.
The defroster would nto work at all.
My one gripe with the car.
All the back windows were foggy, and i could not see out to save my life.
Other than that i really liked it and out dragged a probe gt (yeah yeah but hey, it had a v6)
who was pissed off afterward.
Seemed to handle ok, but drove like a civic/saturn/escort with no personality.

Does the Focus ZX3 model come only in the 3 door hatchback, or can you get the sedan in the ZX3 mode?

Can you say sloooooow? Seems like a good quality car, and good for the $. But far from a racecar. It has a 9.3 sec. 0-60. And I had issues with buying my Sube cause it was almost an 8 sec 0-60. Im used to 7 seconds and below. I dont know how much exactly the ZX-3's are, but you can get a Civic Si for close to $16K now. I hate Honduh's but Id take the Si over the Ford Fukus. But this is just my opinion.

Name another car that can do this for under $12,000. The whole point of the Focus is VALUE, not the fact that anybody thinks it's the greatest or fastest car on the road. But the Focus is, without a doubt, the best new car you can get for that amount of money. The little 3-door deal looks horrible, like a college professor's car. The sedans aren't half-bad though. I just wish they hadn't decided on the Beetle/Neon mis front-end. It's looks cheap. Front-end looks like a sub-$10,000 car, but the rear end (of the sedan) looks a lot like a $23,000 A4 or a Jetta.

The car wasn't built for looks though, but for driving, riding, and utility. It has the best headroom in it's class and the cabin is very nice for that kind of money. It is pretty peppy and a lot of fun to drive. Sometimes, you can't measure "fun-to-drive" in #'s. Take the RS for instant. Compared to other compact sports cars, it's not fast at all, but it's a lot more fun to drive than any of the Hondas (except Integra Type R).
