Exclamation I need your help in getting the value of this car..

A friend of mine who is.. well, now without a car, has found a 1974 Dodge Monaco.. (Don't laugh) with only 40K actual Mi. on it. It's been in storage, but I don't think it was stored properly (ie: in a barn, underwater, etc.,) so if you have an Idea on how much it might be worth, you'd be helping us both out.

BTW, the guy is asking $1500 for it. A deal?

$1500 seems sttep for a 16 yr. old car that may require signficant work to get running properly if it was not stored properly. Does it run? How's the engine compression? You need to do a thorough check of the car first, or offer significantle less. He's probably banking on the fact it only has 40K (or has the odometer rollled over or been set back?)as a selling feature.

A friend of mine owns a Monaco and says that he has a lot of trouble getting it repaired. Apparently they're not very well known and even the Dodge dealership he's taken it to on several occasions says they've never heard of a Monaco. Even if it has relatively low mileage, it could still have lots of problems from the improper storage and your friend may have trouble getting them fixed.

That's all second had information, though.

There is a long story behind this, but about 3 years ago a friend of mine bought a 74 Monaco in Texas for about $950, it was in excellent condition and had 98000 miles on it.

Thumbs down

1974 was not a good year for American cars. The mid to late '70's American cars pretty much all sucked bigtime. On top of that, it's a Dodge! The engine is probably good for another 100,000 miles if it was properly maintained. But the Chrysler products of the '70's, '80's (they're all K-cars!) and '90's (IMHO) were very poorly built vehicles and the car will probably die before the engine does. I wouldn'y pay more than $1500.00 to $2000 personally. It's not like it's a classic. If it were a classic Mopar (i.e. Baracuda, Charger, etc.) with those low miles on it, then you'd have something worth big bucks.

Exclamation

Sorry, I just re-read your post. If the car wasn't stored properly and isn't in good operating condition, it isn't worth $1500. The only thing this car has going for it is cheap transportation. I don't belive there would be much if any collector value. The fact that it has low miles makes one think that this will be a reliable car, but if it were improperly stored and things like the electrical system were left to rot, forget about reliability. You could get a much more reliable and newer car for $1500. Don't be afraid to shy away from higher mileage newer cars. You're likely to be fixing any used car you buy, but it's a lot easier to get a newer car fixed than an old beater like a '74 Dodge. Just my opinion as a past owner of several old used "beaters" including a '78 Chrysler Cordoba.
