Cool WRX purchase opp for me! PLEASE help

Ive come across a 95 WRX in my area that is for sale. Its about 8500 for a
complete drivable car. It makes ALOT of sense for me to pick this up
considering the extra mods I am considering not to mention a cheaper car
would be much easier on the pocket book.

I need help in trying to get it registered. Has anyone done this or heard
of someone who has done this? I really would like to sell my 99 and pick
this one up. If things do work out is there anything I should look for
before buying?

thanks

Nick

Hey Nick, if it's not already registered (which I believe legally it probably can't be) then you're screwed as far as driving it on the road.

Having said that a friend of mine swears he saw a RHD WRX in LA once and I never believed him.

I really can't help but I'm intrigued to find out whose this is, why they have it and why they're selling it etc.

Right now its in pieces (engine on a pallet etc) but everything is there and ready to be put together. I really hope I can find out a way to do this.

See ya

Nick, I wish you luck!

The engine is out because that is the only way to (somewhat) easily import non-legal cars like that...somehow if the engine is sitting next to the car in the same container it's alright by the EPA and Customs...but if the engine happens to be sitting IN the car...well!

There is no easy way to do this, especially as you live in Cali, home of the 1-state smog regs and the smog witches known as CARB. However, there are non-legal cars running around, registered. It can be done, but I have no idea how. You may find some secret email some day in your box, but no one is going to post here in the public how they did it. It basically involves swapping VINs and other such trickery. If people can get a turbo'd RS to pass, that part of it shouldn't present a big problem.

Again, good luck...and swing by Ventura if you ever get that thing going. If not, you could probably buy the car and part it out and double your money back. Seats...Al control arms...ahhh...

Cool

cough... ahem... psst...

you didn't hear this from me... but certain Porsches in this area would switch VIN plates with totaled cars to make illegal grey-market cars legal "totaled and rebuilt" cars. Cough!@#!$959@#$%@cough.

But we don't have emission inspections every year either.

Shshshshs... don't tell anyone. You didn't hear this from me!

Hey, just an idea but buy a RS engine put it in the wrx when it is assembled and then swap it out after it is registered. It might work or it might not but worth a thought.

I don't see it happening, it doesn't matter what is in it - it's still a WRX - it doesn't meet US crash requirements etc.

It's just not allowed (legally.)

rsquire has the 22b

Seems to me this pile of parts is easily worth at least the money being asked. I know for example rallispec.com gets about that much to install a used WRX engine

Cool

It legaly possible. I had done it a long time ago with a 67 Camaro. I forgot exactly how, something about one wrecked car and clean title and another car that was a rebuilder. It actually came out on the title. Again I have forgot most but I know my car ended up having two vin numbers on it

IE you take your wrecked WRX and another wrecked title and car and rebuild using both and depending how it is rebuild you would actully have the US vin on the Japan car.

Maybe you should ignore this post, since I am confused. Your best bet would be to call a body shop and ask them how they do it with rebuilders.

I thought about the RS engine angle, but I dont think the RS engine would go in nicely. Im also trying to work the "home built" car side of things.

Wish me luck, and again, ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Nick

Anyone RSquires email?

Simply solution:
1: Buy a '95 Impreza L (One that is already leagal in the US).
2: Strip the L down to a shell (leaving the peices with the VIN).
3: Reassemble car using all the WRX pieces.

Now you have a legally registerable Impreza (because of the VIN designation on the body shell) that has been converted (rebuilt, whatever) into a WRX.

The old WRX body shell can be sold for scrap, as it's VIN would never allow it to be registered in the U.S.

Think of it this way, you would be driving an Impreza L...with a WRX drivetrain swap, interior swap, body panel swap.

Tuning the engine to run on 93 octane and pass emissions will be your only hurdle.

Hope this helped

P.S. I'm considering doing the same thing to my wife's '95 L...

Opie has the right idea. It's not so simple as swaping VIN plates. The VIN is also stamped into the frame of a car. If you have an accident and your insurance company finds out your car has different VINs, they won't cover you. This includes liability if you hit/kill someone else and get sued for $$$. You will be personally liable. NOT worth it. But if you strip a US car to the frame and build it up with WRX parts, legally it's a modified US car, but a US car all the same. The frame is the single irreducible piece of a car. You can swap the engine, drivetrain, interior, but the frame is the DNA of the car. Insurance should be okay; I'd check to make sure tho.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Turns out I can build it as a custom car and get a new VIN assigned to it. My only other hurdle is smog.

Rsquire works for Microsoft so you should be able to guess his email. It's available in the sites memberlist.

Although his 22B is in the UK I'm sure he knows all about importing (he tried.)

It's "Bollocks" commonly shortened to "Bollox" (we Brits are lazy like that)

thanks for the giggle... :-)

p.s. you could also have said:

they "shagged the ***** off it" and many such variations.

I do not know how but my friend's dad has a
early 80's Mercedes Benz AMG with hammer package etc. and it was imported from Germany. I do not think it was legal but he can drive it somehow.

I don't know if this helps but rsquire's 22b is not in the US. I may be wrong on this but last time I saw it some of his friends were drivin' the bulloks (sp?) off of it...and it wasn't in Washington.

While Im working on a way to get around smog, Ive also thought of another potential problem. If I go to the DMV and they VIN and register the car as custom built, Im wondering how my insurance will treat that!

One more orange square in my blue side of the rubics cube.

That didnt make any sense did it?!
