Question Spare Tire

Well, I'm looking into getting some new wheels for the WRX and was thinking of putting some 17" wheels to replace the 16".

My question is, if I'm riding on 17" wheels and I happen to get a flat tire, would/should I replace it temporarily with the 16" spare tire? Or should I buy a 17" spare tire (which then I would ask if a 17" wheel/tire will fit in the spare tire compartment... I'm assuming it doesn't)? Its common sense that you shouldn't put on one 16" wheel with three 17" wheels but would this be OK until I get to a service station or my house? Or would this damage the Subie's AWD system?

Any advice is appreciated.

The existing spare wheel will work, as the diameter of the the 17in wheel / tire combination (should be) the same as the stock diameter wheel / tire conbination.

205/55/16 is the same (or very close in diameter) as the 225/45/17 in combination. The only area where you might run into problem is you installed a BBK on the front that requires 17 rims.

Nigel.

So unless my spare is nearly exactly the same diameter as my other 3 wheels/tires, I can't use it? How much does the difference have to be to be unacceptable?

1/4" is the maximum recommended diameter difference, and you may not be able to fit a 17" spare in the spare tire bay because the tire is fatter (just a thought... I am not certain)

Has anyone been able to do this? Fit a 17" x 7.5" tire/wheel in the spare tire bay?

Thanks in advance.

-Ryan

P.S. Just to make everyone jealous, its about 73 degrees here...
