Talking First real Ski trip

Hi from the Mid-A region!

Well as the subject reads, I'm finally making the trip to 'the west" for a real ski trip.

Heading to Snowbird and Alta the first week in March, which I'm told is also college spring break. (Good and bad I'm sure).

Anyway, I've been wondering if helmets are recommended? I'll probably ski blues and single blacks although I've never skied in POWDER so who knows.

We're staying at the Cliff Club for the week.

Totally pshyched!!

Peace,
Oquipah

heya oquipah, i started wearing a helmet a couple years back, after a pretty bad wreck. Scared the crap out of me! Anyway, id recommend it, but thats just me. Im a pretty fast skier, i never learned to turn.
FYI, Alta is for Skiers. but both resorts are great.

Nice. No turning?! Sounds like my first time...right into the hay bails!

Our group consists of all skiers, no boarders so we're golden. Do you know if they rent helmets?

Also, wondering which of the other 'local' resorts people recommend? We'll have a car so if we must travel we're okay there too.

Thanks! Looking forward to waist deep light and fluffy stuff!

Alta has received over 350" so far! That's just sick!

Peace,
Oquipah

I started wearing a helmet a few years back. I won't ride without one again. I recommend to anyone to wear a helmet.

I dont think any resorts rent helmets but definitley check into it.
Other resorts? if you want to travel a bit, Powder Mountain and Snowbasin are fabulous. Snowbasin was the site of some of the skiing events for the olympics. Having said that though, I love Alta, and rarely go anywhere else.

Solitude is like one giant terrain park. Great mountain but it can be frustrating getting around it if you're used to Vail-type mountains where there are more lifts than trails.

The one time I skied there, I got lost at Solitude and ended up at Brighton.

I'm used to the Poconos and Appalachians, that means that there is practically no way to get lost on the mountains. And there are more people and there is more ice than anything within 10 miles.

Totally pumped for the trip!!

Another question for the Utah reps...can you get Guinness out there? (Like other than at a club?)

Thanks,
Oquipah

I started wearing a helmet five years ago when I started skiing more advanced terrain. Since then I have had 2 concussions (both this year actually) and avoided at least 5 that I can think of right now. Definitly worth the money.

My opinion is that a helmet isn't needed until you get to the point of interacting with trees/rocks, or you are going very fast. I ski blues and single blacks, and I don't see the need for a helmet. yet.

I bought a helmet for safety reasons but I wear it for the warmth. It totally blows every hat I've ever owned out of the water in terms of insulation.

And yeah, they're sort of mandatory in thick trees.

what's a helmet? helmets are always a good idea just like seatbelts are always a good idea.

anyway the only place that i can think of that may rent them would be REI but you could also try some of the rental places like the ones listed in this link:
http://www.skiutah.com/travel/rental_shops.ski?area=4

also Snowbird is for skiing too. it is just that Alta only allows skiing. weak.
