Default 03 WRX ecu on a 02?

I've got a good opportunity to trade for an 03 WRX OEM ecu to use as a spare. Will this be good to go on my 02? How about after a reflash such as Accessecu?

IIRC, the '03 can be backwards compatable with an '02 car enough that it will run while you are getting your '02 flashed.

I believe there is an extra fuel system sensor and corresponding input that the '03 ECU is looking for. I don't know what will happen when that signal is not present.

I have a spare '02 ECU that I rent out for people to get theirs reflashed, so If I were you, I'd pick up the '03 ECU and do the same.

This has been my experience. I basically went through and compared all the pins on a 2002 WRX wiring harness to that of the 2003. My car is actually running with a 2002 WRX harness and a 2003 WRX ECU. Consequently, the only problem is the missing fuel system sensor pin going to the ECU.

The pin in question is B137, 23: Fuel Tank Sensor Control Valve. It shares the same input as a couple other fuel tank sensors so I will be adding a pin to my harness and tapping off one of the other signals.

Talking Core exchanges

This is why we offer free ECU exchanges when customers want a reflash... we send you a new, reflashed ECU and you return the original to us.

I've also run my 2002 with a 2003 ECU, no big worries.

What do you guys think of the vice-versa? I am getting an 02 ECU and will be putting in on my 03. Do think I will encounter any major problems?

Whoops! Changed my mind before you took me up on it. Turns out the 03 is backwards compatible, but the 02 is not forward compatible--so i would be taking a chance + a shipping hit only to lose versatility.

So, there is a compatibility issue of running an 02 ECU in an 03 car? What is exactly would the problem be? A CEL?

Thanks!
