Question 2.2L to 2.5L swap?

soon, i'm going to get a subaru outback sport 1999 or 2000. i really want the 1999 2.5 RS but i can't find any. so i decide to get the OBS and drop a 2.5L engine in there. first, besides the engine and tranny, what parts would I need? second, does anyone know where i can get these parts?

you dont even need a tranny. the 2.5 will bolt up to the existing tranny and its basically the same so it will handle the power (only reason to change would be to go from an auto to a manual or if you wanted the 2.5 tranny with the 4.11 final drive as opposed to the 3.90 of the 2.2.

if the 2.2 is a single exhaust port per head then you need to change the manifold to a 2.5 exhuast manifold.

and if you want to change ECU you have to have the ECU and wiring harnesses.

I'm doing the same swap...96 2.2 to a 99 2.5.

Hawk-- I think I read that you did this swap and used the 1.8 ECU? Will I be able to use my 2.2 ECU to run the 2.5...or do I need to pull my dash and run the 2.5 wiring/ECU? I already have the uncut 2.5 dash harness just in case.

My 96 L is also the California emissions model...will this cause any trouble?

I've been searching a lot and you (Hawk) and supermoose seem to have been there and done it with the 1.8...but I haven't found anyone who has done the sohc 2.5 into a 96+(obdII)? I'll be starting on it next week so let me know if you have any advice for wiring/ECU issues.

Thanks

Where have you looked? You can't find one "cheap"...or you really can't find one?

I see them on ebay from time to time...salvage yards are a good bet too(but pricey). Put a wanted ad up on this site and you should find one.

Legacy's also share the 2.5. If you are looking for the Phase I--they're everywhere. Phase II are a little more cash--but they're out there too.

Did you find a car yet...or are you just dreaming? You might want to work on that first.

good luck

I'm failry confident that you can in fact run the 2.5 off of the 2.2 ECU. But I have not personally tried it with an OBD II car and a CA one at that. I am sure it will run fine but as far as Check engine lights go, i just dont know. So thats why i kinda shyed away from suggesting that route.

But yeah im pretty sure it will run, might have a few more tricks to it that can be overcome. but i havnt personally done it yet so I cannot say for sure.

There's 2 or 3 MY99 EJ25's for sale in private sale classifieds right now. How much are you looking to spend?

i have a 99 2.2 sohc.. and i was wondering how much trouble it would be to change to the 2.5 sohc?? if it's not compatible do any of u know of a better engine that is compatible? I would love to opt for the newer sti and titanium tranny.. but i'm guessing that would be next to impossible.. let me know what u think
