Question Topsider.... anyone heard of it???

Was just shown the Topsider by my uncle, it's used to change your oil. It's basically a tube that you put where your dipstick goes that allows you to pump all the oil out of the car without removing the drainplug in the oilpan.

He uses it on his BMW, but suggested I make sure there isn't a baffle inside the WRX's oilpan that would prevent the tube from reaching the bottom of the pan.

Has anyone heard of this product or used it? Or know if our oilpan has a baffle that would prevent a tube from reaching the bottom?

I'd say just use a Fumoto Valve instead.

The one possible problem with the oil-suckers is that they may not clean out any crud in the bottom of your oil pan that would get flushed out by the oil running out the drain hole. They use very small diameter tubing to fit down the dipstick hole, so it's not like you can vacuum up solids.

It's amazing how these threads recycle themselves...

Here's a recent thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=466274

Short answer -- topsiders don't work in modern Subaru engines because of a baffle in the oil pan. This has been stated in FAQ on the manufacturer's websites, and I have personally verified this.

A topsider is a perfectly valid method of oil change. It's been shown to be more effective then a gravity drain method at removing oil. Those that think there's crud left by this method really are not thinking it through. If crud is stuck to the oil pan, it ain't coming out by gravity or suction. If it's in solution, both methods are fine, and in fact suction performs a more complete evacuation of the oil in the pan, so therefore removes more of this so-called crud.

I use a topsider (I have the Griot's model) in my non-Subaru vehicles. Used correctly, this is a very clean, tidy, and complete method for removing the oil from the crankcase.
