Cool Almost made a $20k mistake - fixed - cancelled my Vw order

I almost made a $20,000 mistake and ordered a Golf 1.8T4door 2 months ago. Thankfully it hasn't arrive, so I cancelled the order on Monday. If the WRX turns out to be as described, I am the first person on the list at my local dealer (who is not accepting deposits yet).

Phew! Got my $500 deposit back too.

WRX should definitely be better than a Golf.

The WRX will be unique, for all the right reasons. You didn't correct a bad choice - but you made a better choice. Assuming we can ever order one . . .

I dunno what you guys are talking about. The 1.8 Golf is a great car. Chipped, exhausted and intaked it is a SUPER FUN car to drive. The german 1.8 turbo responds greatly to mods.

The 1.8T GTI is a great car and responds very nicely to mods (for short $$$ too). However, the WRX will be all that, and then some. AWD and now people are saying an 'underrated' 227Hp engine. Out of the box with no mods, the WRX will out-speed, out-handle, and out-perform the VW GTI 1.8T. There is no question in my mind that the WRX will be the fun car on the block! My vr6 will be up for sale, that's for sure.

Unhappy

I hate to admit it, but its true. I was a rabid VW fan, and still have a place in my heart for em. I've had a scirocco, two modded rabbit GTIs, and a jetta, and they are good cars. Fun to drive, great autocrossers. But, I agree totally with subiegal. VWs aren't as reliable as Subarus, and they don't have AWD. The Subaru WRX is what VW had with the original GTI back in 1983-bang for the buck, without any gimmicks. Good choice going with Subaru. I love mine.

The 1.8T is, without a doubt, a respectable car, however, it still won't be able to to hold a candle to the diluted WRX. Golf's have piss poor handling and looks just can't compare. Not to mention the AWD advantage.

I heard a rumor about an AWD rally-type GTI debuting in 2002. Supposedly it pushes 200+ hp ( But I'd bet my bottom dollar it's as heavy as a cadillac).

I think that Rally Golf your talking about is the 4Motion Golf with 205hp that they have in Europe...
It was in that Article awhile back compairing it vs. the Euro-New-WRX (215hp) and the Audi S3...
Lets just say that the Golf couldnt even compair to either one...

But, you also might be thinking of the Beetle RSi which might be showing up on showroom floors in the US next year...

Angry

Of course, now that I informed my wife that the object of my desires is a Subaru she is trying to squash it. She cannot believe I would want a Subaru over a new BMW 325is. It all keeps coming back to status and resale value. I care about resale, but status I could care less about. Unfortunately she is refusing to buy the car until she gets a test drive - which means I'll likely not get it in the 1st model year (all sold out). Damn, spouses put an end to all kinds of boyish dreams!

By the way, I agree with those who said that the 1.8T is not a bad car. It is actually *very* nice, and with modifications is very quick. However, as is true with most things around my house, I need to get the car from the showroom floor the way I want it because there is no convincing my wife that a chip/suspension is at all useful! (I'm sure many of you have heard it - "You can't even *do* 140 mph or 0-60 in 6 seconds on our roads, so why do you need a chip in the car?)

So the WRX was my ticket to getting another pocket rocket, like my Scirocco. We'll see what actually transpires. :-)

p.s. Maybe I'll convince her that it is a better autocross car, since she agreed to try autocrossing for the first time next season.

Take her for a ride in it when you test drive one. I'm sure she will be impressed. If not, find a new wife. Where are your priorities?

PS - Cool name. (I code for a living)

Believe me, on the new wife thing, that it'd be hard to find someone as flexible - she lets me buy all kinds of toys (harmonicas are my latest thing).

I agree, one ride and it'll be ear to ear grinning for both of us. I am just hoping that there will be any dealerships that have the cars for test driving.

Oh, and the name thing is something I use on all my message boards. I tried using cout<<, since I am a C++ guy but many servers don't like the << very much. Anyway, thanks for noticing.
