Default Suzuki Swift GTi?

i might be in the market for a cheap (<$1000) beater-type to get me 5 miles to school and back...might be doable if parking the protege during the week will drop my ins enough. plus the weather and college-lot parking is taking a toll on the poor Pro (cracked windshield, big 1/4 panel dent, scraped bumper, salt...and 30,000 miles in 16 months).

maybe to double as an autoX beater if it seems more intriguing/cheaper than the Slowtege.

any opinions/knowledge on the Suzuki Swift GTi?

1800 lbs
100 hp
5-spd
4-wheel disc brakes
!power mirrors!

i found one for sale w/ ~93k on it. edmunds priced it at $900 dealer retail.

i found a whole bunch more info online than i ever expected, but of course i'm going to consult teh all-knowing OT.

other candidates:

88 bmw 325, $1200 (mileage not listed...i'm guessing it's up there!)
~90-93 civic hatch (various _X models...non Si)
~old subie legacy/XT/RX/GL/etc...not much out there right now

What years where a GTI Swift made?
Some of the Swifts on this site are pretty neato: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~crawfy/home.html

I say look for a 89-91 Civic Si. Don't go for the weak carb'ed 1.5 L non-Si model. I only say this cause I'm partial to the Si since I have one.

I had a 1988 Civic DX and it was Fuel Injected. Honda stopped selling carbed cars in North America in 1987, I believe.

I was loaned one for an afternoon about 10 years ago. Fun car. No power anything. Not much different from a Geo Metro or the European Subaru Justy of recent vintage IIRC.

I only had it for about 4 hours so can't comment on the mechanicals, durability etc.

edit: the one i found was an '89.

p1, i think the swift was from ~'85-97.

the GTi (later GT after VW sued them) was basically a hopped-up version of the regular swift, which basically = metro.
