Lightbulb Screw light on bumper

I was thinking about installing a light bar on my RS but since I couldn't decide how I was going to do it I just left the idea and will probably think about it this summer (I had the rally innovation bar in mind). But a couple of days ago as I was walking in front of my car I just saw those holes where you can install a licence plate so I thought to myself... Maybe I can get lights and install them onto the bumper for now and move it back to the bar when the time comes.

So the question is : Does anybody have any experience installing lights with the screw holes from the licence plate? Will it be strong enough? Looks like the holes are platics only... I'll probably have to build some metal corner to install the lights on and screw the corner onto the bumper, but that's only details. BTW I won't rally my car, it's my daily driver and daily fun.

edit : a picture worth a thought words

Uhhh...

I think the holes in question are only on the plastic bumper cover. I recently had to go to bigger screws because the old ones backed out too easily and the plate started to move at high speeds.

I wouldn't recommend using those to mount anything that would need to support weight. There isn't anything solid back there to mount to, unless you consider foam solid.

It also depends on the lights you want to mount. little bitty ones could probably mount using wall expanders (the ones you would use to mount something heavy to drywall).

I would go with the www.rallyinnovations.com bar, but I am partial to them, they are making me something custom for my lights.

Impreza WRX STi the famous rally innovations bar

I've just check the holes tonight to finally see that they end in foam has you said. Well, I think I'll forget about that. I've already saw the great bar from rally innovations but do you know if they ship in Quebec? I've check their distributors and none of them seems to take orders online. That's definitely the best way to do it... and to be able to expand to 4 lights later on! Well, thanks for your tips guys.

I am sure they would ship to you. Or contact John directly and he can help you out. Here is a discussion in the Vendor Forum on NASIOC.

i've had a set of very small driving lamps (Hella FF75) "bolted" to the plastic bumper cover for a long time and they are plenty stable...You just have to use a good fat washer on both sides of the plastic to securely clamp onto the plastic surface.

but anything bigger than those and I'd want more stability.

You might try the inner holes as they are the metal. Just look for the larger of the two holes. I am not sure why they are there, but if you drilled into that, you would be going into the bumper beam. In theory it should work

Thumbs up

I have had no problems running this way for over a year now. Check it out.... I've had them up high and down low, depending on which way I rotate them.

Since they're driving lights they work better up high.

I think I'll go and buy my lights and install them as Samirr66 said until I get a bar.

my old light mount:

this was meant to be very temporary and was screwed into the holes in the bumper cover. The lights fluttered like all hell, but it was better than nothing. We did a similar install on a WRX with similar results.

I now have a "proper" light bar that attaches to the front crossmember under the car and the upper radiator support, very solid, even with the (much) larger lights on it now.

Here's what i did for my car. I know that it's not the same year as yours, but I think it could give you some good ideas.

And if the picture doesn't work, here's the link :
