Default 1 Bedroom Apt. vs. Room in house

Basically I am tired of paying this BS one bedroom apt. rent here in so-cal, and their raising my rent to boot. One option is renting a room out of a house, where i can save a TON of money (litterally 700 dollars a month).

I am hesitant tho because of 1. Roomates and 2. Less of my stuff around.

Is the monetary savings worth it? I think so. Paying my current rent is killing me, i'll never be able to save for a house at this rate.

I was going through the same quandry. I opted to rent a room in a house. It's alot cheaper (say $400 / month here in Metro-Detroit) plus I get garage space. I kinda like having roommates actually.

I have a 1 Bedroom apt in San Francisco.

Plusses:
-No one touches your crap
-No one leaves messes
-You don't have to bug your roomates about the rent or utilities
-You can walk around naked and poop with the bathroom door open

Minuses:
-Freaking expensive ($1550 for my rent, plus I have to pay all utilities)
-Lonely sometimes (The cat doesn't say much)
-No one to watch the place when you go out of town

In April, I'm moving back into a roomate situation and I'm actually looking forward to it.

It's personal preferrence. If you value your privacy, it might be worth the extra dough to ya...if not, "get a room!".

I have done the room-in-house things a few times when I was younger. If you get along with everyone and they are reasonably quiet it can be great. If not it can be hell. YMMV

It all depends on the specifics of the room you are renting. Over crowding is the biggest concern. How many people are sharing the bathroom you will be using? Look at how clean/dirty the bathroom is before signing up. How many people are sharing laundry facilities? How much storage space will you be entitled to in the garage/attic/basement? Is it possible someone is going to move in with a dog or cat that may trash your stuff? Are the other tennants in a similar life situation/schedule? Last thing I would want right now is a bunch of heads partying until 3 am mid-week. However, when I was in college that was the norm and I LOVED it!

Roommate situations are relationships, and they can be great or awful depending on the personalities involved.

W3rd! I have a choice of renting a 1 bedroom apt for $500 a month (though it is kinda crummy), in a neighborhood that's 25 minutes from work, or rooming up with my brother in his Loft for free, in a hood that's only 10 minutes from work. I think I'll just move in with the Bro. I mean, common! His place is within 1 block of 3 happening bars, 10 minutes from Downtown Chicago, and it's a freakin sweet apt!!!

Oh yeah...Party at my place when I move in.

Exactly...I would be very leary about renting a room with total strangers. I share a house with my friend and his wife (we're both on the lease) and I have no real complaints, especially with the saving on cash. But we also all get along very well, so to me that's what makes it possible.

Think of it this way, which is what I do:

For $700 a month, can you deal with picking up after someone else in the fridge, them stealing $20-$40 worth of food a month, and waking you up from time to time?

For $525 a month I clean up after my roommate! He does not have to do his own dishes, and if he eats something of mine... oh well (unless it's like a $20 steak, you know, within reason) and i vacuum his room when I do the rest of the apartment. I'll clean the kitchen after him if needed, and pick up stuff for him at the store. In return, he is not a complete jerk and so we get along pretty well.

Too bad he is moving out. He bought a house.

rooming with your brother is not the same... we are generally already pretty used to living with our siblings... it is when you are in the same situation with strangers and acquanitinces that things get uncomfortable.

Save the cash, get out and up ASAP.

As for personal security, keep your family heirlooms & precious junk in a rental locker. They are real cheap per month, at least in my area. Close and lock your door when gone unless you really can trust the homies.

Save your coin and buy a home as quickley as possible.
Thats my advice and life lesson.

This situation is different. My brother moved out when he was I was only 5, so I don't have any memories of living with him. Also, he just recently decided to not shun us anymore about 4 years ago. Pretty much, he has just been a picture on our mantle for the past 10 years. But things change.
