Angry STI cracked on by Porsche owner

A guy that sits right next to me at work seen a Subaru screensaver on my computer with Richard Burn's car and the 555 car in rallies and other races. Well he just drives an old and slow Porsche 944(non-turbo) and said I don't see how such a puny car(Impreza on the screensavers) could be in any races. He said it is so small and has no power. Why?
I think I might take him to the track for a little race with my stock MY00 sedan vs. his stock Porsche 944. Hmmmmm

I got the screensaver from "peaty" on this board. Send him a private message with your email address that can handle over 2 megs and he will gladly send it to you. I would send it to you myself, but since I have a slow computer at work I delete my install files as soon as I install them.

did anyone else see Burns roll the Porsche when he was doing a guest run in the British GT series? at least I think it was the GT series... I guess he's not used to having solid track under his tires...

Hmmmmm... can't have respect for a car that pulls 300+hp out of a 30mm intake opening? (I'm still amazed by that one)

Poor, poor man--Just doesn't know what he's missing. But lets not judge all 944 owners as 'Stupid' now---OK

I used to have a '851/2 (yes, the half means something!) 944-N/A-It had to be one of the best handling cars I've ever driven!
Unfortunatley, it lacked on power-
It had the same displacment as the RS but man that was a big 4-banger. It isn't as compact as the flat 4 though.
I would love a '88, '89 944 turbo S or...oh oh oh....A 968 CS-Did they ever make it to these shores-or was it a european only model?

easy on the Porsche 944 guys. When it was introduced it was widely hailed as the benchmark for sportscar handling. It's not all about speed.

Oh, and my 12 year old Porsche was built far superior than my 2 year old impreza.

***********************************************
AN APOLOGY

Dear Motorists,
Subaru Australia would like to apologise for the article titled 'The Handling Debate' published in a recent issue of AUTOCAR (UK). The contest unfairly pitted the two-wheel drive Porsche 911, BMW M3, Lotus Elise and Peugeot 306 GTi-6 against the All-Wheel Drive Subaru Impreza WRX.

It was not so much the result that has embarrassed us, but the way in which one of the most respected and authoritative motor magazines went about damaging the reputation of the world's mmost prestigious car companies.
It must have been heartbreaking for them to read that Autocar named the All-Wheel Drive Subaru 'The Ultimate Driver's Car' and called it 'one of the outstanding car designs of the decade.'

Obviously Autocar were amazed by the acceleration off the line of the Subaru during the Traction Test. But did they really have to go on and on about it? 'Six and a half thousand revs, dump the clutch and away she goes, And there was nothing even the 911 could to touch it.'

Our hearts go out to all those rear-wheel drive Porsche who paid 5 times the price of the Subaru, only to come a distant second. As if they didn't have enough insecurities already!

And it's hard not to feel for the poor BMW drivers whose M3 clocked up an impressive 46/52mph in the Speed Corner Test, only to read '... that was nothing compared with the beautifully balanced Impreza through the bend. Result? A crushing 52mph in the wet, 58mph in the dry and the widest smile from our driver all day.' Really, how could a two-wheel drive be expected to compete with that?

But it wasn't until Autocar said '... so well balanced was the Subaru's basic handling and so well apportioned was the grip between the four, driven wheels that --- in the dry the Subaru was untouchable.' that the rumours and innuendo began to surface.

For the record, we would like to state that every new Impreza, Forester, Outback and Liberty we sell does in fact contain the unfair advantage of Subaru All-Wheel drive plus our unique flat-four boxer engine and symmetrical drive line - Admittedly, it does make contests like this a little one-sided.

So much so that All-Wheel Drive vehicles have been banned from the world's major motor sport competitions like Formula One. Only the World Rally Championship allows us to demonstrate the full advantages of AWD. A championship, by the way, we've won for the past 3 years.

Even Autocar admits 'a properly sorted All-Wheel Drive car like the Impreza will blitz any two-wheel drive rival in virtually any objective handling contest. That's a truly astonishing result given the quality of the rest of the field.' You see, there was nothing they could do.

In the end the only thing we couldn't handle was all the attention. "There was one very clear winner in this contest. The Impreza was more composed, generally faster and markedly grippier than most of the competition in most of the tests.'

Again, Subaru would like to apologise for any harm or distress this has caused any makers or owners of two-wheel-drive vehicles and outrageously expensive sports cars.

The fact that our All-Wheel Drive vehicles start from $21,9901, (and $39,990* for the Impreza WRX) must simply rub salt into the wound.

For those looking for compensation, please visit your nearest Subaru Dealer. By experiencing All-Wheel Drive yourself, it should go some way to making the whole situation easier to handle,

If you would 1ike a full copy of the Autocar article in question, call Subaru on 1 800 642 454, or visit our website www.subaru.com.au. And remember, we don't write the articles, we just make the cars.

Yours sincerely

one wonders why the contest wasn't more even? instead of the 911 Crapera, (typo?) they could've included the Carrera 4 or the Turbo? hmm.... P1 vs. Turbo 911? that oughta be interesting. Oh, but I have a Motoring video that compares the Impreza Type-RA/Type-R, Skyline GT-R R34 V-spec/non, Rx-7, Evo6, and the NSX. It was pretty cool, but they complained that the Impreza suffered from heavy understeer and was 'underpowered'. Odd, considering all these cars are SUPPOSE to have 276hp.

Have a Nice Day?

hmmmm......Porsche 944 owner calling the impreza puny? I think it would be interesting to line the two up for length comparisions. I would be willing to bet that the coupe is almost the same length as the 944. The sedan? forget it...

well, ok, maybe not straight-up crap, but I wouldn't buy it. I dunno about the "driving experience" which is, no doubt, very important, but by straight up numbers, the Carrera isn't impressive considering how much money it is. This has been a major complaint of the NSX, which may play a part in its slow sales. After all, its what? 90-100K for a new one? Friggin A! For a car that can barely outrun say... a S4. shoooot, for that much one can get a R34 and even get the 500hp+ upgrade. I dunno. I guess when compared to its big brothers the Turbo and the GT3, and with all the other fantastic cars out, the Carrera isn't high on my buy list that's all. Didn't mean to offend any Carrera owners.

I saw burnsie flip that porche, he did not do it by himself, he was trying to avoid a wreck directly in front of him and it clipped the rear of his car and then her rolled. He was in the top ten when it happened!

8Complex, the fact it (The WRC) gets 300BHP is not that great, the fact it gets 540lb/ft of torque is absolutely astonishing

0-60mph in 4 seconds on gravel !!!!
