Post Mazda RX-7 iii vs. MY2000 4D 2.5RS

Went to see "U-571" at the theater last night with my Buddy who owns a '93 RX-7 iii.

After the show we came burnin' out of the parking lot. I jumped him off the line and burned through a left hand turn at 50mph ... All I could see is his A$$ end in the rearview mirror going this way and that throwing up more dirt and gravel than a semi. (Score One for AWD ) He lost so much power whippin' it around in that turn that it took him several seconds to overtake me once we hit the Freeway. I topped off at about 122 going against the wind as his Red Demon came smokin' past me at 150+ with turbo screaming like a Banshee.

You gotta admit though. . .power isn't everything if it doesn't transfer to the road surface!!!

(Note to Readers (disclaimer): no people or animals were harmed in any way in this act of insanity. There were no other vehicles on the road at the time. Drivers of above mentioned vehicles take full responsibility for their actions. Please drive safely and within your capabilities. Be considerate to other motorists.)

I have danced with my friend in his RX-7 iii too, and with similar results. I spank him in the curves. He mostly returns the favor on the straights. Cept' as we were doing this through So. Cal freeway interchanges his light wieght and high torque was an even greater penalty.

uh... I think your friends need to learn how to drive

The third gen RX-7 is one of the fastest point A to point B road cars on the road today. Of road, well... that's another story.

I was actually going to buy a third gen. RX-7 before I was converted in to the church of 2.5 RS. They're are incredible cars. It's one of the best looking cars I've ver seen too. The problem is of course, they're not made in the US anymore and they're really really high maintanance. And I don't know enough about cars to keep an RX-7 running well. Anyone ever check out SCC's Project RX-7. Holly @#$*. That thing is a beast.

heh, I think shiv's checked out scc's project RX-7 a few times.

(he owns it, writes the articles)

the problem is that it's not as forgiving as an RS. stock, an RS comes with tons of understeer for your safety. (bleh!

even once you mod it and get into oversteer, the AWD pulls you out of any reasonable drift as long as you stand on the gas.

Thumbs up

I agree with it being one of the Fastest point A to B cars. I almost bought it before my friend did. the price was $13,900 ..only had 18,000 miles on it. Excellent condition. Only problem is that I love the Subarus and I can't even fit my Briefcase in the trunk of an RX-7 and you can't exactly mount a Rack for Canoes, Bikes and Snowboard on an RX-7 either without looking like a complete *@&%#$%^?. In other words . . it's a Beast car but not Practical for anything other than Pure Driving Enjoyment. I like my all purpose, great handling, zippy Subie!

Cool

Everybody need a friend with a Twin turbo RX7 Then they can say cute remarks like "are those functional hood scoops?" Then you take them everywhere in winter.

PS Shiv getting a little defensive with the RX7 comments

The Gen. 3 RX-7s happen to handle pretty well, the skidpad rating on a normal RX-7 is .92 g's, and the R1's are 1.01 g's. Needless to say that doesn't matter on gravel or dirt, but if it was dry road, he could probably have kept up pretty well, even around turns. I'ts my second favorite car next to the Impreza, and also that much fun to drive. I almost got one too, but the practicality of it, especially compared to that of the Impreza, was too much of a difference to ignore.

Question

He picked up that monster for only 13.9K???? HOLY COW, that's good. I saw a 95 in the paper last fall for 22-23K. If I could find a RX-7 like that with low miles, I would sell the Scooby in a heartbeat and buy a second car to drive in the winter. (I live in CO)

$13,900 . . . I wasn't kidding. the deal was from a friend though. I would have had to pay $15,000 but even at 15 I was considering it. the practicality of it is what Broke the deal.

Not to be a pain in the ass here, but I used to own a tricked out third gen RX7 before I toasted a rotor/apex seal.. the car was pushing upwards of 350HP and handled like a dream.. with the suspension mods I had in it, the thing was unreal.. Im afraid your friend wasnt the best driver on this one.. My RX.. if it was still alive.. would spank the crap out of my subie (the one I just sold).. turbo, torsien rear diff, perfect 50/50 balance.. oh well I shouldnt talk.. my new vw bus handles like a bathtub with an outboard motor.. I just wanted to put the RX7 thing in perspective..

Rally 123 has a very good point there guys, I've been a rotary lover for a LONG time, and all the things he has siad is all true, like the 50/50 wieght distrubustion, the RX-7(3Rd Gen) can out handle a Viper, Corvettes and most ****ty ass American sports cars. I'm hoping to get a 3rd Gen Rx-7, but the only prob is that they are very rare in Canada so that really sucks. Hope Mazda brings the 1999/2000 4th Gen RX-7 to North America

While we are on the subject, I would like to ask Shiv how the his Subaru compares to his RX7. Have you ever compared lap times? How about on the road, is there much difference between them from A to B, keeping in mind the limitations of slow moving traffic, on-coming traffic etc?

Is the Subaru your daily driver and the RX-7 just for special days or do you alternate?

Thanks.
