Default New Car Warranty / Adjustment Question

It has been a while (8 years) since I owned a new car. My 04 WRX has 2200 miles and I will do my first oil change soon. Since there are a few minor things I would like to have the dealer look at (shifter rattle etc), I plan to take it to a dealer for the first oil change. Am I supposed to pay for any "diagnostic" fee for these problems? Since it is a brand new car I think I am entitled to some adjustments to imperfect parts etc... please kindly advise!

It is all going to depend upon what is wrong.

Thanks Brian!

I have another question. I read that dealers are taking note into their computer network when cars check-in with mods so that in the future, in case that car has big repairs like blown engines and trans, SOA has evidence. I fully understand if the car has things like FMIC, full turbo back, boost controller etc. However, what is the extent of this? I am afraid to bring my car in with just 17" STI BBS wheels. Or do they don't note "minor" things like wheels and tires? Thanks agian.

Dealerships only notice modifications if there may be a possible link between the mods and the reported problem. No dealer cares if your window doesn't go up and down on a Stage IV WRX. There might be cause for concern if your wheel bearings went south, but I am 90% sure that the STi wheels have the proper offset anyway. The only time there is really cause for concern with mods (this is what I heard 2nd hand from our regional Service Advisor) is when major $$$ repairs occur such as a new turbo, tranny, or major engine component. When it's a high dollar item, your dealer MUST call SOA for the OK. If it's a low dollar or non-drivetrain related item, SOA could care less. I suggest you get personal with your Service Manager and talk to him/her about what their policies are.

Untrue. Many dealership's techs/service advisors/service managers do mark down anything that is aftermarket and noticeable on the vehicle and 'flag' the VIN #, though they are not required to do this. Beyond that, if a service rep is at the dealership, he is required by his job description to note any modifications from stock to any vechicle he comes across and flag the VIN #, whether it is sitting in the parking lot or up on a lift. They may or may not do this, but they are supposed to. There are people in SNE that will not come to the local meets because they would be 'working' overtime at them .

Gunner, your wheels and tires will most likely not be an issue. You a Gunnery Sargeant by any chance ?

Wow! Glad all of our SOA reps are cool. We had every single regional representative at a couple of our local meets, from the regional parts to regional service advisor. None of them cared in the least. Our local SOA PR rep even had a modded WRX.

I guess the advice given depends on your particular area. Where do you live so I know where not to go?
