Lightbulb A timeshare rally car???

So, you guys may remember hearing about (or seeing) my poor silver 99RS rolled at buttonwillow. Well i have bought it back from the insurance co as dead (cheap too) and want it to be a full on weekend rally car. BUT... I dont have the time/money to do it myself so was thinking of making it kind of an I-club project and anyone who donated resources to get it race ready would get a proportionate amount of seat time in it racing or just practicing. I think it would be valuable to let people who havent raced before have an oppurtunity to do so without risking their daily driver (like mine was). It was only cosmetically damaged in the accident so heres the list of needs (i think..).
New roof w/lexan windows, new trunk lid (with wing?), roll cage, race seats, race tires, 5 point harnesses, fire system, rally computer, trailer and tow vehicle, bunch of time spent sitting around it yakking about subarus... So what do you guys/gals think about this one?
Chris

I'll step up and volunteer my time as a wrench monkey. Do you have a space to tear apart/rebuild a car?

Your best bet IMHO is to make a Production GT class rally car.

I wouldn't touch a wrench until the budget and use was obvious. Remember also that the cost of rallying is often hidden behind the prep of the car. (travel, new parts etc) Sharing a car sounds great, but I would hesitate to time share something crashable.

Also: you can buy Trevor Donisons SCCA class champion car (Neon) for $7k fully sorted. I know its not an Impreza, just putting things in fiscal perpective.

It may be more realistic to make a safe track day race car and rent it out with waivers.

Cool

When do we start? This is for BART. Where is the car now and when do we start leaving parts? Probably the first thing is make it straight again, I know a frame/body shop in Sunnyvale...Anchor Auto Body, on Evylen, tel 408 restore. Ask for Tony, or Jim or anyone...they all want to help you. Long waiting list (I waited a month for them to start.
Maybe we can put bluesaint's car together w/Chris's and get some of the $1500 subaru gives for 1,2 or third (It may pay for itself,

Well, it looks like its a good idea, but then comes the questions of what class does it run, do we want it to be a professional rally car or something for a bunch of us to beat up on the weekends, what happens if someone munches it irreperably... I dont think it needs to go to a frame shop, it 'seems' straight except the roof which i think is a replace but maybe a lot of sledgehammering, cutting, rewelding... Perhaps we should have a meeting over pizza one night with all those interested and see if we can reach some sort of agreement/arrangement. What about at the next BAM? Any opinions? Also, i still need to get it here from bakersfield where its at and im thinking of renting a uhaul and buying some ramps to get it in. Anybody have a truck and trailer and a free saturday?

Don't bother with the rent a Uhaul and drive it in... I was in the military where many a man has done this with small cars to get more moner for their move... and ended up damaging the car/belongings and the truck... Not worth it... Besides renting a trailer is close to the same cost (maybe cheaper than) rentin a truck.... Find a decent 3/4 ton and a full center axle trailer... then go for it... DON'T forget your towing an AWD car!!

Question

Well, i just thoughtt it would be alot easier since i dont have a truck to tow it with and i could just pull it in and strap it down. I was thinking of just putting some blankets and cardboard on the l;eft side and straping it to the left side wall since the left side of teh car is pretty crunched flat anyway... Ive just seen too many of those cheesy drive on trailers (all 4 wheels) have some problem and fly off the road. I guess i should just call a car transport company and get a quote...

Yeah, that's about right.

Hey nmorespd, out of curiosity what are the problems that your buddies had with the uhaul approach? Seems pretty straightforward to me, as long as it's not the little dinky U-haul that's built on the back of an F250.

I would prefer to transport my car in enclosed comfort...

I wouldn't venture so far as to mention buddies.... But I have seen a wide variety of vehicles get plopped in the back of the trucks...

1) Remember that extra weight ABOVE the Center of Gravity for the truck can cause havoc and panic for a driver...

2) Getting the vehicle in and out... If you blow it, even a little you can not only damage your car more, but the truck... More Money...

3) Depending on the truck you rent... Some Uhauls have the inside wheel wells, just a reminder in case your vehicle isn't tall enough... Damage to these also means MORE money...

Yeah the lack of a truck puts a damper on towing a trailer... Just MHO, I towed a 1992 Buick LaSabre from Irvine to Sacramento (loaded itself) behind a 24' (I think) UHaul and had no porblems, hell I even managed to keep 55 Mph up the south side of the Grapevine...

Consider renting a UHaul Pick-up and towing the full trailer, may even still be cheaper than the big Uhaul... You get a deal on the trailers when you rent other stuff...

Mike

(BTW don't forget, whoever you decide to use... Force them to fight against their competitors... This saved me about $400 on my move up here and I got 2 extra days and 350 extra miles...)
