14-year-old to enter Ph.D. program

Drexel University has accepted another student into the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Ph.D. program, which seems like a common occurrence, except that this graduate student is only 14 years old.

"Alia will be a fine addition to the rapidly growing graduate program," Dean of the College of Engineering Selçuk Güçeri said. "She is a fast learner and a creative thinker."

According to Güçeri, Alia Sabur will attend Drexel in the start of winter term and will be treated like any other "high-achieving" graduate student.

Sabur was born to Julie and Mark Sabur on Feb. 22, 1989. She started talking when she was eight months old and began reading full novels when she was two. At two-and-a-half, she started writing and completed her K-6 curriculum by the end of her first year in school.

By the end of fourth grade, she left public school and began undergraduate studies at the age of 10 at Stony Brook University in the fall of 1999. There she did some prominent research for the university, most notably the use of coherent fiber optic cables to produce hollow beams.

The beams are cone-shaped and hollow in the center, and are mostly used in atom trapping, according to Sabur. She said her approach is a much cheaper alternative to the usual method, which is the use of Axicon lenses. These are a complicated system of lenses, which can cost from $60,000 to $70,000 and can be extremely difficult to use.

"My new method of creating these hollow beams does have a few difficulties, as of yet, such as that the beams are much too large for what I wish to use it for," Sabur said. "But if I can be successful in resolving few issues, this application of fiber optic cables can lead to a patentable technology which may have important applications especially as a replacement system."

Sabur graduated Summa Cum Laude from Stony Brook University with a B.S. in Applied Math in May 2003. During her tenure at SBU, she studied abroad in both Italy and Mexico.

As her school for graduate work, she chose Drexel over both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford, saying that Drexel has an "excellent graduate engineering program and exciting research." She also chose it to be near her clarinet teacher, Ricardo Morales, who is a new member of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Her other instructor was the famous grand master David Weber.

Aside from being interested in math and sciences, Sabur is equally interested in the musical arts, having played the clarinet since she was 7 and declared a prodigy at the age of 11. Recently Alia preformed in a concert to benefit the Grace Smith House, which helps victims of domestic violence.

Sabur also obtained a black belt in Tae Kwon Do at the age of 9. Alia’s other interests include rock climbing, roller-blading, running, horsemanship, traveling and art.

Güçeri was Sabur’s major contact, she said, adding that she considers him an excellent recruiter, scientist and, from a musical standpoint, an excellent pianist. Sabur said she is looking forward to playing with him in a concert sometime in the future.

as smart as she is, i bet she can barely hold a normal conversation in a public setting with a "normal" person. of all the geniuses I have met over the years, all of them were socially inept. but good for her. she sounds smart like. she learn good.

Does anyone else think she'll turn out to be a female John Nash. The Princeton Professor that the movie "A Beautiful Mind" was based on?
