Post Bay Area Dealers' extended warranties

WRX extended warranty: Anyone get one? What are the local dealers charging?

Carlsen Subaru is charging $1984 for a 5yr/100K extended warranty. Pricey, but the one cool thing is: if you don't use the warranty, you get a 75% refund when it expires.

If you ever have to use it you'll be glad you have it, and if you don't... at a net $500 cost after the rebate it sounds like a cheap insurance policy. (I'm told a dead turbo is $2K+ to replace.)

AAA is offering a 6 year 85,000 mile for $772, I think that is the Platinum level (hmm, matches my Platinum Silver wagon, nah).

I am a member, but I am pretty sure you do not have to be a AAA member to get it. I may not insure my WRX with AAA, since I got a $100 cheaper quote from State Farm and I asked my rep if I had to have auto insurance with AAA and he said No.

I am actually thinking about this coverage and it is certainly much cheaper than the prices quoted above.

Thanks,

I saw the AAA coverage too, but I seem to recall that there were some items that weren't covered compared to the Subaru plan... turbo? Some secondary systems? I forget exactly. If I'm wrong it's a better deal. Just double check / compare the covered items before you buy.

Thanks for the heads up. Now, if I can just find the brochure, I can check.:-}

I am going to stop into AAA and get another brochure and post the exceptions.

While we are on the subject of extended warranties, with my last 2 cars, Toyota & Honda, I opted not to get one, thinking that these cars are very reliable and that the extended was not necessary.

What are the reasons you people are considering one? Do you think it is just good insurance, with Subarus having a very good reliable rating? I would appreciate hearing your reasoning or maybe experience of this kind of policy saving you bacon down the road.

Thanks,

Well, AAA's coverage is not important now.
My AAA rep double checked with the main office and found out that AAA's Extended Warranty does not cover the WRX.

Get the price for the AAA Platnium coverage (approx $772, $150 deductable) and then go to your dealer with that price. Ext warrenty price is negotiable. I got mine lowered quite a bit from the approx $1582 Bianco quoted me. Go with the factory ext warrenty. This way you also don't have to deal with approval and you don't have to go to specific shops.

I know that my parents always get a 100k warranty on normal-use cars (the boxster doesn't have it, but both scoobies, the truck, etc). All of our cars in the last ten years have had something after about 80-90k that made us really happy we had the warranty; complete valvetrain on a mazda MPV, new tranny on a trooper, that kind of stuff
after all the wonderful stuff I read about head gaskets on the series 1 motors, I'm glad I've got iot on my outback; just hoping it goes before 100k if it's going to
