Smile External PE1820

Has anybody attempted to hack an uppipe and put an external wastegate onthere bolt up PE1820? I have heard of people picking up serious power just by ditching the internal crap.

thanks,
jordan

I don't think you'll pick up any power just better boost control/response

Changing to an external wastegate won't make any more power. 18psi is 18psi no matter what. You might have better control and response of the boost but certainly no more power.

p.s. I kinda like my internal. I've never had problems with it.

Not too much of a point of an external gate w/that turbo, but... if you want it:

Ext. Gate

Not sure bout the quality or performanceof this kit, just found it while browsing around yesterday...

all the 1820 needs is a heavier spring, an external will no accomplish much of anything

I apreciate the repsonses, but how would it not get greater performance, yes I understand that 18psi is 18psi, but less backpressure from the internal wastegate in the downpipe would not give an increase in performance, cutting off your exhaust sure does?? I am not trying to be cocky, or a know it all, because I really am an amatuer at this, but a few very well respected people in the sr20 field told me they dyno higher numbers...

thanks,
Jordan

p.s. does anybody know anything about that external setup from DN performance? looks pretty sweet.

not to knock DN performance but you are paying 1K for just pipes.. if you get the Buschar 16 G kit you get a new turbo too. (a turbo designed for ext wg) its only 600 more.

In no way will you make MORE power with an external. Like the others have said...you may get better boost response....like getting to full boost a bit quicker and then being more stable when there....but you will have no real max hp gains.

If you want to reduce back-pressure from the internal gate, just spend a few bucks and have an HKS DP modified to dump the internal gate to the atmosphere. It would sound insane and also accomplish what you seem to b wanting.

It does become expensive but there is nothing like HKS External racing wastegate.Boost is very stable and when you want power you do not want to be loosing boost like a lot of the internal turbo wastegates do. Like Schaf100 says it is very very loud. WOT it is so loud that I can`t hear my HKS BOV.

the PE1820 has NO issues venting enough air to end up with stable boost, trust me i have watched one hit 24psi with the heaviest spring, it took 1/8" movement of the flap to drop that boost and hold it steady
