Default Atlanta area autox question

Hey gang,

I'm thinking about doing some autox this year for the first time ever. I have never even been to an autox before, so I'm a complete n00b...I have been to numerous track days, though, so I've got a fair grasp of car control skills.

I was reading the rules/classing thread and had a question for someone who is local here.

I currently have an adjustable RSB w/aftermarket endlinks, Koni inserts on Prodrive springs, Cusco camber plates in the front, an aftermarket 4 pot BBK in front, R compounds, a full turboback with 3rd cat intact, PDE catless uppipe, and Cobb ECU reflash. I also have an STI scoop...

Based on what I read, my car fits within the category of STX but I'm not sure about those camber plates. Am I correct in saying that any sort of camber adjustment devices place me in SM? That's the way I'm reading it, but honestly I didn't wade through the 40 pages of that thread, either. The scoop appears to throw me into SM also...

I'm sure I will suck for a while so you guys don't have to worry about me coming out there and spoiling your fun. I'll be the really slow, old, bald guy.

Any other pointers you can give would be cool...like when the events are, etc. etc. Which class is most competitive from a local level, etc.?

Thanks!

Scott

I think the brakes and the r compounds are going to put you in SM. Camber plates are ok in STX.

I thought about going to that ProSolo with the family -- but it looks like the weather is going to suck. Maybe I could come out for a little while on Saturday...'solo', haha...

The Brakes are OK for STX...two things throw you into SM....The hoodscoop.... and the R compounds....

Get rid of both...put some Azenis on...and you good to go for STX...

Otherwise...welcome to street Mod...

Wait -- my bad. It actually looks like I would fall into Street Prepared (ESP), not STX.

I misread the rules earlier. ugh.

So...is there a reason why not too many people compete in ESP as compared to other categories? I notice a lot of people do DS, STX, and SM but I don't recall anyone that does ESP. Is this a bad class for WRX due to other cars, or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Scott

Victoracers no good in ESP? Changing the scoop is a no-brainer. Might be good to go back to the 'stealth' look.

'cause you get hosed by the powerful light cars in ESP...check the appendix in the back for what cars get classed there...

it used to be the mustangs and stuff...I'm out of it after the reorganizition a couple years ago.

Cool, that's what I was figuring. So, STX seems like a good choice then...

I can slap Azenis on the SSR's and be good to go, then.

When does the season start? I'm already an SCCA member but I guess I have to get a license, etc.

Who else around here runs STX?

Thanks for the info guys!

you don't need a license, it's not road racing...

just show up with your SCCA card to an autox and you're good to go...run a couple regionals to qualify for the pro class stuff...

I ran the pro in Oscoda, and I hadn't soloed for a year...

Cool...

Last question, to be fair. Nobody addressed this earlier.

I have a Cobb stage 2 reflash. That raises the factory boost target to ~15.5 psi but there is no external 'boost control' device or any physical modifications. Does that automatically throw me into SM? I'm a little fuzzy on the rules there.

TIA,

Scott

ANY kind of boost control throws you into SM. A/F and timing changes are ok but boost control is definitely SM. Even to the point of having a BOV.

OK, so that leaves me with some choices.

I can either go directly into SM, or de-mod the car a bit and go back to STX.

I would hunt up another unmodified ECU to swap in for autox weekends to make it legal for STX. The hood scoop is not an issue.

Am I correct in saying that I would be prepared near the *top* of the limits in STX, but near the *bottom* in SM? I know a lot of the hardcore, tranny-bustin', stage 4+ guys run SM. I'm not even going to start playing that game!

If this is true, then I expect STX will be where I land...

::shrug:: it's all in the driver... Depends on if you care about being all that competitive. I run SM because I love the way my car is set up and I don't care if I bring home a trophy. Warp3 actually placed 2nd at our last autocross in his RS with suspension, exhaust, and cams... way outgunned by a turbo eclipse, etc.

Yet another stupid question:

Can someone tell me what these mean?

March 13 School (w/ Mini Club) Atl Turner Field (Blue)
March 14 Points #1 Atl Turner Field (Blue)

(this is from http://www.atl-scca.org/race_schedule.htm)

Does this mean a sort of autox school, explaining the rules, etc? If so, that would rock. Is the 14th the first event of the year?

Sorry for all the stupid questions...thanks again, guys!

Thank you for your honesty.

I'd be lying if I said that I don't want to compete a little bit. Bringing home a trophy is not important to me, but I want to be in a class where the driver stands a chance of winning based on his/her performance instead of just how many $$$ can be thrown at the car. Does that make sense?

I run faster laps at Road Atlanta if I'm leading/following someone I can be competitive with. I'd like to find a similar situation in autox if that is possible...

Thanks!

not really, I had to go home real quick to get some furniture delivered...

besides, we're all at WORK.

I'm more than happy to come to an autocross to beat you in your car.

Oh, I have no doubt you'd beat me in my own car. That's why I'm learning.

So...when would you like to commence the beating? I could certainly use your advice!

Looks like A) that school is only for Mini owners, and B) full. I'm still trying to figure out if the 14th is open for everyone. Let's just say the Atlanta region SCCA website is not, ummm....very good. Yeah, that's it.

I think it just means the miniclub will be there.. and possibly helping... STX is a very competitive class too.. so there's no guarantee there. WRX's usually do pretty well though. (KC won Nationals for instance... Tom placed way up there too) Just have to get a feel for your region and which class you'd be more happy running in.
