Cool Nobody knows how fast we are!

I just started working at a place here in town. There are a couple of guys there that are into cars, and they both made fun of me, about my car, until I smoked the crap out of both of them. (A VW Jetta and a Toyota MR2). Neither of them had heard of an RS and both thought that I had put both the spoiler and front bumper on,(aftermarket).
Needles to say they are well informed now! But man, I love suprising unsuspecting people with the speed of this car!

In a sly suave voice;
"...ya see, you have to take a special driving test just to order one. these are specialized racing vehicles. they don't let just anyone have them on the open roads....."

took my first victim the other night.... a V8 dodge dakota. he stared until i pulled off afterwards...

A guy my brother works with, at a car stereo install shop (you know they see alot of cars) who is all into american cars (he had a v6 firebird..lol) took him out for a ride a while back.....it went something like this...

Took off from his work, running up to about 90, seeing a left hand turn into a industrial park, i brake HARD, buzz the left hander, notta problem. Heading into the industrial park i see it dead ends into an open turn around (i didn't know the area) comming into the turn around, i brake HARD, pivioting the back end around somewhat like the poor guyz firebird... i punch it out of the slide...heading out of the park i hit at least 60 before having to brake HARD again. Made the right hander heading back to his work...up to bout 110...when we got back....all the kid could say was, and i quote "Thats a 4 cylinder" over and over again with that "just saw a gost" face....
He He He.

Thats just one of the peeps i have schooled.

Yep, Had a fellow here at work that despite having never heard of an RS, was certain that it was just an econobox and not in the same catagorie as Vetts or M3s etc. So after hours I gave him an STi equiped torture session through the lanes in the lot. He has since nick named my car "The Vomit Comet."

While I agree it is fun to have a car that not many people are aware of, the sad truth is that the RS is not really super fast. Fast enough to outrun most average cars and their average drivers, but I cringe when I watch Autoweek on TV and they do a road test of the latest SUV and it's 0-60 is less than .5 seconds slower than the RS. Ugh.

Now what's really fun is to get that tailgating SUV onto a twisty road. As other posters have mentioned, going around corners is so much more fun.

I'm sure the ugly-as-sin Porsche Cayenne will be pretty peppy as well. It'd have to to make up for that exterior.

Well I originally said within a half second.

And if you are being honest with yourself, the RS is a hair over 8 seconds (from every source I've ever seen it's been over 8).

There are lots of SUV's that come in under 9 seconds. Not that they would necessarily beat an RS, but just the fact that they are so close is a bit annoying. Some of those Fords with those huge torque monster engines take off pretty quick.

I guess I just find it a bit amusing that lots of people think of drag racing as the end-all-be-all of car competition. Every car board I go to, for any brand, it's always "I was at a light and this guy in a XX revved on me and I totally wasted him." That's all you hear anymore.

You are hardly being honest with yourself if you believe a stock 2000+ rs runs 0-60 in 8 seconds or above. Only casses i would buy that one is if you are in terrible sea level or you just plain cant launch the car the way it is meant to be launched.

I, along with my friends and others that sometimes get togther to drag and time 0-60, personally have hit 7.5 with a stock impreza. Consistently i found 7.6 and 7.7.

Matt

ps. There is a difference between 98 and 99 models. So dont throw those stats and specs at me.

How many subarus could you buy for the price of those SUV's or how much money could you put in mods to match the price of one of those SUV's.If I bought a subaru and put another 20k into it I would smoke those SUV's like they were parked. I would still have enough money for gas.

Stock lightnings spanking an RS? Not a turbocharged one it wouldn't. Maybe the top end. Mod your cars and life will change. I've beaten 2 12 second Lightnings on the street with scores of people watching. They are cool cars and all but they can be beaten. As well as Pontiac Firebirds WS6, Camaro SS, Mustang Cobras, etc, etc. They aren't invincible.

They all can be beaten and be beaten badly. Trust me! WRX.....come on!

Kewjoe, It was a non-turbo MR2. I have a '99 with a cold air intake and aftermarket wheels and tires. MR2 had an intake and some kind of exhaust. The VW Jetta had an intake.
The guy with the Jetta still doesn't give he RS it's due respect. But he claims that he blows the doors off Integras in his I4 VW

Kevin,

A lot of your street racing involves beating the driver, not the car.

[edit] If you've got your wagon into the 12s (I thought you were running low 14s on a track?), I'll eat those words.

Greg.

Go magazine racers! Car and Driver is the authority yo!

Why dont you quit reciting lame ass publications, that obviously know how to drive a car, and go time yourself.

Drop that baby in around peak hp and torque.

See what happens.

Yeah, in some cars it is tougher to match the magazine 0-60 times than in others- tougher to get a good launch, you have to abuse the car by dropping the clutch from a high rpm, etc. The magazine times are under the most ideal conditions too...
