Default ABS light/ ABS is dead

The car: 1995 Impreza L EJ18
5 speed AWD
4 wheel disc brakes w/ABS

So last night i went to start my car. clutch in, foot on the brake turn the key. As soon as the car started I could hear the ABS motor run for a second and the pedal vibrated, then it stopped. I drove 3 blocks and parked the car.

THis morning When I started the car the ABS light was on. And a simple test in the icy parking lot confirmed that the ABS was not working. I turned off the car and restarted, same thing.

My question is- WHat causes this light to go on, Is there any kind of self diagnoses like the ECU? and how can i fix this?

Thanks alot ahead of time for any advice suggestions or ideas. This is an area that I don't know too much about.

There is an ABS control unit similar to the ECU for the engine. If the ABS light is on there should be a code stored in the ABS controller that can be read out, although I don't know if there is a way to do so yourself on your '95. You might have to go to a dealer or shop to have it checked.
One thing you can check yourself is the fuse(s) for the ABS system, make sure none are blown. If there is a blown fuse you can try replacing it but chances are there is a problem and it will blow again.
If you've driven through heavy snow/ice/mud there could be damage or contamination to the wheel speed sensors which will cause ABS failure.

I forgot to mention that I did already check the fuses and they are all ok. (not only visually but double checked with a multimeter.

I changed front knuckles a few thousand miles ago and the front wheel speed sensors were siezed in there pretty good. THey got kinda narfed up while swapping them over but they still worked for a few thousand miles.

Yes I have been driving through a lot of deep snow and ice. Although for the past week it has been snow free.

It is very interesting to me to learn that there are trouble codes for the ABS computer too. would anyone else know the the procedure for checking this?

Mulder-thank you very much, that info is great.

FSM does tell how to read ABS codes, although I never tried it myself. Let me know if you need that page.

avk- That would be awesome and much appreciated if you could get that info to me on ABS code reading.

I dont have a complete 95 manual (just a ton of photocopied pages in a binder) and even all of that stuff is at my home in MI (I am at school in IA).

If you could find the time ide be greatful.

Thanks a ton guys.

ohh ok, I didnt know what you meant by bulbs. Nope didnt change any. But I did jump that wire under dash to a ground and read the codes. Looks like both front speed sensors.

Is it possible your tires are unevenly worn?

Hawk: I noticed the diagnostic section you have says something strange about the sensor codes 21,23,25,27, namely that they "cannot be stored while vehicle is stationary". I hope that means simply if the memory had been cleared, you have to drive the car to set those codes, but can still retrieve them in a usual way.
cvalle: you probably had code 54, faulty stop light circuit. The controller has a brake switch input, so it's connected in parallel with the lights and can monitor their resistance to the ground when the pedal switch is off.

The codes I retrieved were 21, 22, and 24. If i clear them, as soon as I start driving the light comes on again. It remains on until I turn the car off.

Right now I am having bigger problems though (major driveability issues, misfiring on all 4 cyl, bucking and stalling) so I have to fix that first. At least I have brakes, just not ABS. Seems like everything is going wrong all at once.

Thanks for the help.

P.S.- if you have any ideas on how to make my car run right let me know!

If you haven't changed the plugs AND wires recently, I'd do that. Do the bucking/not running right problems happen both right after you start the car and after you've driven it for a while and it's fully warmed up?

PLugs and wires are 13 months old. around 13,000 miles. Its an intermittent thing. Both cold and warm.

Can be driving steady state, and you can feel it switch modes kinda and feel sluggish, at that point if you ease in 20% throttle or more it starts to misfire and backfire through the intake adn exhaust and if you play with the throttle you can get ti to stall completly. However as soon as you back off the throttle the tinyest bit it fires right back up. then after a few min its like a switch is flipped and it drives fine for the next 5 min until it does it agian.

No CEL

I replaced cam/crank sensors, MAF, coil, ignitor, ECU. I checked the TPS sensor. nothing changed.

TOday I am going to check the fuel pressure. Its really really annoying.

Another long shot: could it be a problem in a vac hose or fitting? Just trying to think about what's stressed more when you up the throttle...
