Default problems with static in sound

I've got a 2000 impreza rs and notice when I turn the stock system up to about 3/4 of max volume I begin to notice some static in the sound (like constant crackling). I was wondering if this might be due to the speakers or the headunit or if this might be something else entirely. any info would be appreciated.

Sure it's not the recording? Are you listening to the radio? Assuming that it's the stock sound system, then that's probably the problem.
