Unhappy Fan Rationality code

I own a 99 Subaru Forester. I took it to the dealer for what I thought was a water pump going bad. It turned out that the code they pulled on the diagnostic was 483 Fan Rationality code. What happens is the radiator fan does not come on for some odd reason and it loses coolant. They told me that this code has occured only three times in the past five years and they do not know what it means. All I can do now is keep checking my coolant level once a week. Can anyone tell me what this code means and what to do about it?

If your fans are not working, then logic seems to dictate the coolant temp sensor is not as well. I'm sorry to say that you are probably loosing coolant because your headgaskets are gone.

Default Coolant Fan

What is a 483 Fan Rationalitycode? The dealer said they have only had this diagnostic code three times in five years. I am losing coolant because something is not telling the fan to come on when needed at times. Sometimes it runs normally. The dealer had no recommendations.

Wha? Switch dealerships. They don't know their own codes?

This same code has come up more than once on the same car with different diagnostics. The same problem keeps occuring. They said that the fan motor is probably fine.

P0483 Cooling fan function problem

Find a different dealer.

If they cant fix your car they shouldnt be in business.

Likely as brian said you probably have leaking head gaskets.

A fan not comming on is not going to make you lose coolant unless the car starts overheating and the coolant overflows.

the reason your getting the code is because the ECU is likely commanding the fans on and they are not turning on, its says hey I commanded you on, and your not working, hmm let me turn on the check engine light cause this is not normal.

Try this, turn the car on, then turn the A/C on, the cooling fans should come on.

If they come on, you know the fans are good, if they dont then you have to start checking wiring.

if you are not capable or dont have the means/knowledge to do this yourself, find another dealer.

Default fuses blown

well i'm getting this "cooling fan raionality check" code right now. The check engine light had come on so i did a full look over and found that the fuses for my fans were blown. Put new ones in and fans are running but still pulling this code. Should the check engine clear if self or do i have to clear it? Might there be something i'm missing or should check?
