Default Load Rating of 87 ok?

I remember reading a post Luke did about minimum load ratings for WRX tires. I'm wondering if a 215/45/17 with a load rating of 87 (1201 lbs) is enough for my car?

yes a load index of 87 will work fine on your car ... as a matter of fact the OE 17" tire has a load index of 87

Luke: do u know what the minimum recommended load rating for a 2000 impreza would be?

Also, could somebody give me a brief explanation of how this is calculated? There is nothing in the owner's manual about recommended load ratings.

thanx,
chris

I don't know about the 2000 vehicles, but on my 2003 WRX, the tire placard in my driver's door frame (the one that tells you what tire pressure to use) specifies the stock tire size as well as an "alternate" tire size - 215/45R17 87. Yup, it even specifies load rating.
