Question Hey Eric and/or Kelley Nelson (or other serious autoxers)

What are the nationally competitive guys using as far as tires in STS?

SO-2's all the way. I had a chance to drive on Hoosiers the other auto-x. They were pretty dead, but still. My times sucked and the car was unpredicable. I love my SO-2's and will never buy any other tires.

I use the Kumho 712. I would also like to try the 711. I think it is a great tire at an even better price. The feeling among alot of the STS crowd is that either the Yokahama AVS Intermediate or the Michelin Pilot SX or MXX3 are the best tires. Those same people say that the wet weather pattern and high treadwear ratings of tires like the 712, the T1-S and similar tires do not make a good combination for autocross. They may be right, technically, but maybe its different in an AWD car. I would like to try the Michelin again, I used them at Road Atlanta in the Scooby School there. I found them to be worlds above the RE92's and wondered why the car didnt come with them. But damn are those things expensive. That's why Im sticking with Kumho. They work well, they dont cost alot, and they pay contingency money. Seems like the best combination to me.

I'm running the Michelin Pilot MXX3. I am really happy with them, but they are expensive as hell and if you drive them on the street in addition to racing on them they may not last as long as you may like. I have a second set of wheels with these mounted and only use them for racing.

Eric is driving the Kumho Ecsta 712. I think you can get 2.5 Kumho's for the cost of 1 Michelin.

In looking at the Ecsta, I would have picked the 711 if tread design was the only thing I had to base my decision on. I am curious to find out if Eric's selection of the 712 was based upon availability.

I've heard good things from a number of people about the S-02, but for whatever reason I don't see them autocrossed often in my neck of the woods

The Kumho seems like a good choice for a tire that is STS competitive, reasonably priced and (on paper at least) is reasonably long lived.

The Dunlop SP8000 is also affordable and a good choice.

Hey Kelley, thats just to funny. We were posting the same thing at the same time. Ha. Never a dull moment. I didnt realize you were driving on the MXX3's. You like them huh? Like I said, Id like to try the 711. Initially, the Kumho tire had to be my daily tire too, so I went for the 712. Honestly, it looks like there is more rubber on the 712 too. Talk about wear, they wont last a whole lot longer, they have seen some abuse.

Maybe I could give your car a spin and you do the same with mine to compare a little. Not on course, but just around. Id also love to take a turbo for a spin (Scott-nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

I had driven the MXX3 at Panoz too and was really impressed with them. Otherwise I prob would have scoffed at the price and gotten something else.

We can go for a spin on them. I went with 215/45 for some underdrive effect. Do the typical ProSolo courses have much 3rd gear in them? I am curious about the Kumho too. I need a new set of street tires.

Pilot's Official STS Tire List:

In this order I reccomend:

Michelin Pilot SX MXX3
Yokohama AVS Sport*
Bridgestone Poitenza SO-2 Pole Position (shaved only; 1/2 tread depth)
Yokohama AVS Intermediate
Continental ContiSportContact
Michelin Pilot XGT Z (out of production)
Michelin Pilot XGT V (out of production)

I think the reason you don't see a lot of SO-2 PPs is cause they suck until they are half worn (lots of squirm when new, and stickier rubber underneath), and they have softer sidewalls than the competition.

*I rank the AVS Sport equal to the Pilot SX MXX3 at autoX. However the AVS Sport is better on the street cause it is better in the wet. It also costs less.
