Default STI Oil capacity???

The owners manual as well as the service manual state that the US 2.5L Turbo holds 4.8 US quarts of oil. I recently decided to change my own oil. After letting the car drain with both plug and filter removed until no more oil flow was evident from either spot, I replaced the filter and replaced the plug and assumed the car was dry. I add 4.5 quatrs of oil and checked, now the dipstick reads above the full mark. Is there something I missed?

Start the car. You need to circulate the oil into the oil filter, which holds near half a quart.

I have changed oil in other cars and trucks before. The level is still up past F after about 25 miles of driving, and sitting idle for about 15 to 20 minutes to let the oil settle into the pan. Just reads high, don't know why.

there should be three marks on your dipstick, the bottom hole is low, the top hole is full cold, and the notch on the dtipstick would be full hot.

what mark is your level at?

4.5 and 4.8 arent all that far off from each other.

I just check it again. It has been setting for over one hour, engine is still warm and the dip stick reads slightly above the notch that is above the F and the hole. As we all know the oil does tend to smear on the dip stick as you pull it from the tube, but I am looking at both sides and trying to get an idea of the actual indication. It just a little high. I used a factory filter, but I guess it could possibly have some sort of blockage or reduced flow. I don't know.

I e-mailed Subaru to ask about the correct oil capacity for an oil & filter change on a 2005 STi, and here is their response:

Quote:
Dear Mr. Hedin:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. The engine oil capacity specification in your owner's manual (4.2 quarts) is the capacity of the engine oil and not the capacity of the engine oil when replacing the engine oil filter. The capacity of engine oil when replacing the oil filter in your 2005 WRX STi Sedan is 5.1 quarts.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance. If you need any future assistance, please feel free to contact us again.

Happy Holidays,

John J. Mergen

YOUR ORIGINAL MAIL:

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about the proper amount of engine oil needed for my '05 STi. My Owner's Manual says that an oil & filter change will require 4.2 quarts, but after changing my oil and filter and filling with 4.2 quarts the level appeared a bit low. Adding another 0.5 quarts seems to have brought the level up to the correct level. Is there a typo in the owner's manual? Please advise, thanks!

What he says below.... Also, I fill the oil fiter half way with fresh oil before I install it.... This was just a habit of mine but someone suggested that this reduce the wear at the first start up after oil change...

Anyhoo, 4.8 quart is what I used as indicated on the manual. It's dead on "Full" mark every oil change....

I never change my oil without also changing the filter. That said, I always put in 4.8 quarts and it always ends up at the full mark on the stick after the first drive. Same for my 2002 WRX as well.
